Expanding Horizons: B3’s New Index Blends Local and Global Brazilian Stocks

In August 2024, B3, Brazil’s main stock exchange, will unveil a brand new index: “Ibovespa B3 BR+.”

This index merges traditional Ibovespa stocks with Brazilian companies listed overseas via Brazilian Depositary Receipts (BDRs), broadening the investment landscape.

Ibovespa, the benchmark stock index in Brazil, consists of 86 securities from 83 companies.

It captures the activity of Brazil’s most traded shares. By including BDRs, this index links domestic investors with global Brazilian firms, broadening investment choices.

Marcos Skistymas, B3’s Product Director, highlights the importance of this update. He observes that capital markets have transformed, demanding more diverse investment solutions.

The “Ibovespa B3 BR+” represents this evolution, combining both local and international Brazilian stocks into one investment platform.

This initiative marks B3’s tenth new index release in two years. Indices are crucial in financial markets, serving as benchmarks that shape investor strategies and facilitate capital allocation.

They also support the development of derivative products like ETFs, thus deepening market access and variety.

The launch of “Ibovespa B3 BR+” is crucial for both Brazilian and international investors. It not only opens up a varied portfolio but also highlights the increasing integration of local and global financial markets.

This takes on added significance given that the competing Rio de Janeiro Stock Exchange, operated by ATG, is slated to commence trading in late 2025.

Claudio Pracownik, CEO of Americas Trading Group ATG announced that the infrastructure will be ready by the end of 2024, with testing phases starting in early 2025.

This new exchange will list stocks like Vale (VALE3) and Petrobras (PETR4), similar to the current offerings on B3.

This development follows the enactment of PL 3276/2024 by Mayor Eduardo Paes.

This law reduces the Service Tax (ISS) from 5% to 2% for stock exchange activities, with potential for additional incentives.

The reduction aims to attract businesses and investors, creating a favorable environment for financial operations in Rio.
