What the New Year’s Test Is and Why It Matters

A Test is cricket’s longest format, played over up to five days, with two innings for each side. A draw is possible if rain or a slow pitch stops a result.

South Africa are the World Test Champions, a title Cricket South Africa says they have held since June 2025. England arrive for three Tests and three one-day internationals between 17 December and 15 January.

The England vs South Africa Test in Cape Town is the third and last, from Sunday 3 to Thursday 7 January 2027. Cricket South Africa, the national governing body known as CSA, calls it the New Year’s Test.

The first Test starts on Thursday 17 December in Johannesburg, covered in our guide to the Wanderers Test. The second is at Centurion from Saturday 26 December, covered in our Boxing Day Test guide.

Dates, Start Time and US Eastern Time

Day one of the England vs South Africa Test is Sunday 3 January 2027, and play runs to Thursday 7 January. The CSA ticket shop lists day three, Tuesday 5 January, with a 10:30 start.

We did not see a published start time for day one, so treat 10:30 as likely rather than confirmed. Check the match notice from CSA in the last week of December.

South Africa has no daylight saving, and Cape Town stays at UTC plus 2 all year. In January the United States is on standard time, so Cape Town is seven hours ahead of New York.

A 10:30 start is therefore 3:30 a.m. Eastern, 2:30 a.m. Central and 12:30 a.m. Pacific. Most American fans will watch the first session live only if they stay up, and the rest on replay.

Why Tickets Sold Out in Minutes

Public tickets for the England vs South Africa Test went on sale on Monday 18 May 2026 and appeared to sell out within minutes. The Citizen newspaper reported that only 9% of the seats went on sale that day.

The Newlands capacity is 17,544, and the Herald newspaper reported that only 13% of tickets are meant for the general public. A further 4% is still to come, together with unused tickets from other categories.

Another 39% went to travel packages, of which 12% were for international travellers and 27% for South Africans. CSA runs the packages through a programme called South Africa Cricket Travel, with the tourism company Tourvest.

A further 21% went to hospitality and member tickets, and 19% to sponsors, teams, officials, media and service providers. The remainder covers restricted-view seats and spaces for wheelchair users and their companions.

CSA said it apologised for the confusion the allocation created. Its chief executive, Pholetsi Moseki, said ticket access should be managed fairly and transparently.

How a Visitor Can Still Get In

On Tuesday 27 October the CSA shop listing for day three said sold out. CSA says a further batch of general access tickets will cost R420 (about US$25) to R500 (about US$30).

No date has been given, only that CSA will announce it in good time. To reach the England vs South Africa Test, register on tickets.cricket.co.za and watch the CSA app, because a small batch can vanish in minutes.

CSA also says it will sell a general access hospitality experience at Newlands once the packages are released. No price has been published, so expect a premium over the general access price.

Travel packages are the other route, and a British operator, Freedom Destinations, lists Cape Town Test packages that include official tickets. Its page marks most packages as limited availability, so ask for the current status before paying.

Avoid resale sites and social-media offers. CSA says it strictly prohibits scalping and warns that fans who buy from unauthorised sellers may be refused entry.

Resale listings above R4,000 (about US$240) appeared soon after the sale opened, the Independent on Saturday reported. Paying that for a ticket that may be rejected at the gate is a poor bet.

Newlands and Getting There

Newlands, home of the England vs South Africa Test, is in the southern suburbs of Cape Town, with Table Mountain as its backdrop. The SA20 league’s guide to the ground mentions trains rushing past and a neighbouring brewery.

The same guide calls the Oaks grass embankment on the eastern side a student favourite. It names the North West Grass as the calmer family area.

The Railway Stand has an awning for partial shade, and the upper sections of the North Stand and the President’s Pavilion give full shade. Our page on Cape Town for newcomers explains the city’s neighbourhoods and transport.

We found no published match-day transport plan, parking arrangement or shuttle for this Test. Book a ride-hailing car or a licensed taxi for the return trip before play starts.

The CSA listing bans coolers, glass bottles, cans, alcohol and musical instruments at Newlands. Leave bags and valuables at the hotel to keep entry quick.

Safety and Costs for US Visitors

US citizens do not need a visa for stays of 90 days or less, the State Department says. It also says arrivals need two consecutive blank visa pages in the passport.

The State Department advises that travellers exercise increased caution in South Africa because of crime and civil unrest. It says the country has a very high level of crime.

Visitors to the England vs South Africa Test should save the emergency number 10111 for police, fire and ambulance. The US Consulate General in Cape Town can be reached on +27 21 702 7300.

The State Department also notes brush fires in the Western Cape from December to February. A trip to the England vs South Africa Test should allow for smoke and a flexible plan.

The planned general access price of R420 (about US$25) to R500 (about US$30) is low by US standards. Flights from the US, New Year hotels and any ticket package are the real expense.

How to Watch the England vs South Africa Test From the US

Sky Sports, which showed England’s tours of South Africa for about 30 years, has stopped buying them, CSA chief executive Moseki said in May. He expects a new broadcast partner by the end of the year, and named SuperSport as the current one.

No US broadcaster or streaming service had been announced in the sources we opened on 27 October. Check cricket.co.za and the England and Wales Cricket Board website before the first Test on 17 December.

What Is Not Confirmed Yet

CSA has not announced when the next batch of general access tickets will go on sale, or how many seats it holds. It has also not published the price of the hospitality experience.

The day-one start time and the finishing time of play are not confirmed in the sources we saw. Squads for the England vs South Africa Test have not been named.

No US broadcaster is confirmed, and no match-day transport plan has been published. Fixtures can also change, so check the CSA and England and Wales Cricket Board websites before you book flights.
