Embraer Dodges U.S. Tariff—Safeguarding Brazil’s Key Export Link

On July 30, 2025, U.S. officials confirmed that Brazil’s top aircraft maker, Embraer, would not face a sharp 50% tariff on its planes sent to America.

The White House, under President Donald Trump, had threatened steep tariffs on many Brazilian goods as a response to wider trade disputes, but relented for planes after high-level talks.

Embraer stands as Brazil’s biggest high-tech exporter, and its jets fly for dozens of North American airlines and private buyers. About 45% of Embraer’s commercial jet deliveries and 70% of its executive aircraft go to American customers.

Brazil has no other foreign market nearly as big. If the tariffs hit, Embraer would have faced extra charges of $9 million per plane, risking more than $3.6 billion lost by 2030.

Its leaders warned that losing U.S. sales would have forced cancellations, layoffs, and set the company back to the hardest days of the pandemic.

When the official exemption was posted, Embraer’s shares jumped over 10% in one afternoon. Investors breathed a sigh of relief, but the threat exposed how vulnerable even major international businesses remain to quick changes in trade policy.

Embraer will keep filling its $29.7 billion order backlog, many planes heading straight to U.S. carriers. This close call highlights that behind big export numbers are real jobs and workers, and one order in Washington can change everything overnight.

For other exporters and their customers, the Embraer case offers a lesson: global trade links can be robust, but they really depend on political decisions that can change at any time.
