El Salvador Secures $465 Million for Key Infrastructure Enhancements

El Salvador will transform its landscape with a $465 million loan from the Latin American and Caribbean Development Bank (CAF).

This funding will support the construction of the Pacific International Airport and launch the nation’s first submarine fiber optic cable.

The airport project receives $320 million, covering more than just a new terminal. It includes upgrades to Ilopango Airport and the creation of Tonala Aerodrome under the ‘El Salvador Flies’ initiative.

These efforts align with the Master Infrastructure Plan 2030 and the National Tourism Plan, aiming to reduce air travel costs and boost tourism under President Nayib Bukele’s guidance.

The Pacific International Airport will create over 4,000 jobs in La Unión. The initiative also plans to provide significant housing developments in the area.

Federico Anliker of the Autonomous Executive Port Commission highlighted the wide-ranging employment opportunities, stressing the project’s benefit to local families.

Additionally, $145 million of the loan will support the submarine cable project. This cable will connect El Salvador to major international data hubs, enhancing high-speed internet capacity.

Improved access to online education, telemedicine, and electronic public administration will significantly improve living standards.

President Bukele has also announced measures to strengthen El Salvador’s economy further.

These include a proposal to halt tariffs for a decade on crucial agricultural inputs, such as fertilizers and animal feed, aiming to reduce food production costs.

A push to lift tariffs on 70 essential food products is also in the pipeline, ensuring the nation can meet its food needs without overreliance on imports.
