Egypt culture is often reduced to pharaohs, yet its living singers, writers, film-makers and athletes draw audiences far beyond the Nile. For US readers the link grew closer in 2026, when Egypt’s World Cup team played in Seattle, Dallas and Atlanta.
The new Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza pyramids drew about four million visitors from November 2025 to August 2026.

Music Stars From Umm Kulthum to Mahraganat
Any guide to Egyptian music starts with Umm Kulthum, known as the Star of the Orient. She arrived in Cairo in 1923 and gave a concert on the first Thursday of every month, broadcast by Egyptian Radio.
She died on 3 February 1975, and hundreds of thousands joined her funeral. That account comes from Ahram Online, the English site of the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper group.
Among living stars, Amr Diab remains a headline act. On 7 August 2026 he opened the U Arena concert season in New Alamein, a new Mediterranean resort city, EgyptToday reported.
Mohamed Mounir is a veteran whose sound mixes Egyptian, Nubian, jazz and reggae influences, as the Cairo culture site CairoScene describes it. He sang the theme of the Ramadan 2026 drama Had Aqsa, according to the UAE paper The National.
Mahraganat, Arabic for festivals, is the electronic street music of Cairo’s poorer neighbourhoods. Wedding DJs began mixing chaabi folk songs with electronic dance beats around 2006 and 2007, according to the Cairo site Egyptian Streets.
In February 2020 the Musicians Syndicate, Egypt’s professional union for musicians, banned mahraganat singers from festivals, clubs, cafes and concerts. In June 2021 it let them join a section for monologists, which allowed public shows under morality rules.
The newest name is Tul8te, a masked singer who keeps his identity hidden and emerged in 2022. His breakthrough song Layalina came from the 2024 album Tesh Shabab, and he plays Cairo’s Manara Arena on 16 October 2026.
Writers, Prizes and the Cairo Book Fair
Naguib Mahfouz, born in Cairo in 1911, won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988. The Swedish Academy said he had formed an Arabian narrative art that applies to all mankind; he died in Cairo in 2006.
A newer generation is winning prizes too. In April 2025 Mohamed Samir Nada won the International Prize for Arabic Fiction for his novel The Prayer of Anxiety.
The annual award, presented in Abu Dhabi, carries US$50,000. Nada was its first Egyptian winner since 2009, according to the US trade journal Publishing Perspectives.
The Cairo International Book Fair, founded in 1969, is where Egyptian readers meet the trade each winter. Its 57th edition ran from 21 January to 3 February 2026 in New Cairo, with 1,457 publishers from 83 countries.
The Ministry of Culture counted nearly 5.9 million visitors by 2 February, the day before the fair closed, Ahram Online reported. Romania was the guest of honour.
Film, Television and Ramadan Drama
Youssef Chahine carried Egyptian cinema to the Cannes Film Festival for more than five decades. He first competed there in 1952 and received the festival’s 50th Anniversary Prize in 1997.
Mohamed Diab took Egyptian talent into Hollywood television. Marvel lists him as director of Moon Knight, a series released on the Disney+ streaming service on 30 March 2022.
At home, the biggest screen season is Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, when channels launch a wave of new series. Daily News Egypt counted 39 series in 2026, shown on channels such as ON and CBC and on streaming platforms.
The 2026 line-up included Amir Karara in Ras Al-Afaa, Amr Saad in Efrag and Mohamed Adel Imam in El King. Theme songs matter almost as much, and Angham, Tamer Ashour and Mohamed Adaweya all sang 2026 themes.
The Cairo International Film Festival holds its 47th edition from 11 to 20 November 2026. Its president is the veteran actor Hussein Fahmi, who still led it in September 2026, the state daily Akhbar El Yom reported.
The El Gouna Film Festival, held in a Red Sea resort town, runs its ninth edition from 15 to 23 October 2026. Together the two festivals bring stars, critics and buyers to Egypt each autumn.
Visual Artists and the Grand Egyptian Museum
Contemporary art has a prominent ambassador in Wael Shawky, born in Alexandria in 1971. His film Drama 1882, sung entirely in classical Arabic, restages the Urabi revolt against British rule.
It debuted at Egypt’s pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale. From 20 February to 16 March 2025 it ran at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
The state’s flagship cultural project is the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza pyramids. It was inaugurated on 1 November 2025 and opened to the public on 4 November, Ahram Online reported.
The museum shows all 5,400 objects from Tutankhamun’s burial together for the first time. Its permanent galleries cover 24,000 square metres.
About four million people visited between the opening and the end of August 2026, a museum board meeting heard in September. Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy chaired it, and museum chief executive Ahmed Ghoneim reported on recent work.
From 1 November 2026, foreign visitors pay US$5 more per ticket, the tourism ministry said in April 2026. Rio Times’ guide to what to do in Cairo in October 2026 covers the visit.

Sport Icons From Salah to the Squash Champions
Mohamed Salah scored 257 goals in 442 games for Liverpool between 2017 and 2026, the English club says. He won two Premier League titles and the 2019 Champions League, and left as Liverpool’s third-highest scorer of all time.
In August 2026 he joined Trabzonspor, a Turkish top-flight club from the Black Sea city of Trabzon, as a free agent. He was still in its line-up in October 2026, Ahram Online reported.
Egypt’s national team, the Pharaohs, recorded its first-ever World Cup win in 2026, beating New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver. It drew 1-1 with Belgium and Iran in Seattle, then beat Australia on penalties in Dallas.
In the last 16, Argentina beat Egypt 3-2 in Atlanta on 7 July 2026, according to FIFA’s match records. The game drew 192.6 million viewers on the Qatar-based broadcaster beIN SPORTS, its biggest audience for any Arab team’s match.
Egypt also produces the top-ranked players in squash. In September 2026 Mostafa Asal led the men’s world rankings, Ahram Online reported.
In the same update Amina Orfi, aged 19, became the youngest women’s world No. 1 ever.

Media Voices and Television Hosts
Amr Adib hosts al-Hekaya, meaning The Story, an evening talk show on MBC Masr. The channel is the Egyptian outlet of the MBC television group.
Adib announced on air in January 2026 that he had renewed his contract with MBC Masr, Egypt Independent reported. He gave no details of the new terms.
Bassem Youssef, a former cardiac surgeon, became famous with Al-Bernameg, a satirical television programme. He later moved to the United States and became a US citizen, according to Ahram Online.
In August 2026 his tour of Australia and New Zealand was postponed while he gathered documents for his visa application. Youssef said the shows had not been cancelled and would be rescheduled.
Egyptian Radio, which first went on air from Cairo on 31 May 1934, marked its 90th anniversary in 2024. It broadcast Umm Kulthum’s monthly concerts.
Festivals and the Ministry of Culture
Egypt’s cultural year follows a clear calendar, which helps visitors plan around it. These are the main dates for 2026:
Who Runs the Ministry
Egypt’s Ministry of Culture has its own theatre sector and works with state bodies such as the General Egyptian Book Organization. In October 2026 its touring project, Confrontation and Touring, reached villages in North Sinai and the Nile Delta province of Sharqiya.
The ministry’s leadership changed in July 2026, when Culture Minister Gihane Zaki resigned. The Court of Cassation, Egypt’s top appeals court, had upheld a ruling against her.
The case was an intellectual property dispute with the writer Soheir Abdel-Hamid. The government then named Higher Education Minister Abdelaziz Konsowa acting culture minister until a permanent appointment.
In October 2026 Konsowa still held both posts, the Cairo daily Youm7 reported. For the wider political picture, see Egypt Explained and who holds power in Egypt in 2026.
- Cairo International Book Fair: 21 January to 3 February 2026, in New Cairo.
- Ramadan drama season: the Muslim fasting month, which moves about 11 days earlier each year.
- El Gouna Film Festival: 15 to 23 October 2026, ninth edition, on the Red Sea coast.
- Cairo Jazz Festival: 5 to 7 November 2026, 18th edition.
- Cairo International Film Festival: 11 to 20 November 2026, 47th edition.
What Egypt Culture Says About the Country
Egypt culture shows a country where the state still sets many rules. A syndicate can ban a music genre, and a court ruling led to a culture minister’s resignation.
Yet the stars who travel furthest often build their audiences outside those channels. Salah made his name in England, Shawky in international art shows, and Tul8te through hit singles.
The Grand Egyptian Museum ties both threads together. It is a state project that presents the pharaonic past to a global audience.
More news on the country is collected on the Rio Times Egypt page.

What It Means for US Readers
For American travellers, the Grand Egyptian Museum is the main new stop near Giza. Foreign tickets rise by US$5 from 1 November 2026.
October and November also bring the El Gouna, Cairo Jazz and Cairo film festivals.
The US State Department rates Egypt at Level 2, exercise increased caution, in an advisory issued on 15 July 2025. It says not to travel to northern and middle Sinai or to Egypt’s border areas.
Tul8te’s November 2026 tour lists Washington, New York, Miami and Los Angeles, according to Ahram Online. US fans who followed Salah at Liverpool now follow him in Turkey’s top league.
Egyptian talent already works inside American culture. Moon Knight premiered on Disney+ in 2022, and Shawky’s Drama 1882 played in Los Angeles in 2025.
What Is Not Known
Egypt has not named a permanent culture minister, and the timing of an appointment is unclear. The acting minister also runs higher education.
The Grand Egyptian Museum has not published a full-year visitor total; the four million figure covers November 2025 to August 2026. Venues for Tul8te’s North American dates were not part of the tour announcement in September 2026.
How long Salah stays in Turkey, and how mahraganat rules evolve under future syndicate leaders, remain open questions. The 2020 ban and the 2021 reversal show how quickly such rules can change.
