Ecopetrol Buys Windpeshi: Colombia’s Oil Giant Invests in Local Wind Power

Ecopetrol, Colombia’s top oil company, has bought the Windpeshi wind energy project in La Guajira, a region known for strong winds.

The company paid $50 million for the project, which will need a total investment of $350 million by 2027. Windpeshi will use 41 wind turbines to generate 205 megawatts of electricity, enough to supply about 8 to 9 percent of Ecopetrol’s total energy needs.

The wind farm should produce around 1,006 gigawatt-hours of electricity each year when it starts operating in 2028. This will help Ecopetrol cut its carbon emissions by about 4.8 million tons over the project’s life.

The company also plans to build a 37-kilometer power line with ISA, a major Colombian energy company, to connect the wind farm to the grid. Windpeshi faced years of delays because of local community protests and regulatory issues.

La Guajira is home to the Wayuu indigenous people, and many energy projects in the area have stalled due to social conflicts. Ecopetrol says it will work with local leaders to move the project forward.

By investing in Windpeshi, Ecopetrol aims to control more of its own energy supply and protect itself from rising energy costs and supply risks. The company is also buying other renewable energy projects in Colombia.

It is doing so as it tries to rely less on oil and gas. Windpeshi is a big step for Ecopetrol, showing that even oil companies see the need for reliable, local, and cleaner energy.

For Colombia, this project could help set a new direction for energy, but it will depend on how well Ecopetrol works with local communities and manages the challenges ahead.
