Brazil’s Central Bank: Dollar Flight Exceeded Inflow by US$10.838 Billion through June 5th

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The exchange flow for the year through June 5th was negative at US$10.838 billion, the Central Bank reported on Wednesday, June 10th. Over the same period last year, the result was positive at US$3.937 billion (R$19.7 billion). The data largely reflect the impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic on foreign currency flow, particularly in March and April.

The outflow through the financial channel this year through June 5th was US$34.330 billion. The result is the outcome of US$230.6 billion in investments and US$264.9 billion in remittances. The segment includes foreign direct and portfolio investments, profit remittances, and interest payments, among other operations.

In foreign trade, the accumulated annual balance up to June 10th was positive at US$23.5 billion, with imports of US$66.9 billion and exports of US$90.4 billion. Exports include US$14.3 billion in Advance on Exchange Contracts (ACC), US$33.0 billion in Advance Payment (PA), and US$43.0 billion in other inflows.

After ending May with a net inflow of US$3.08 billion, the country recorded a negative foreign exchange flow of US$1.187 billion in June through the 5th, the Central Bank reported.

The financial channel reported net outflows of US$929 million in the period. This is the result of US$9.4 billion in investments and US$10.3 billion in withdrawals. The segment comprises foreign direct and portfolio investments, profit remittances, and interest payments, among other operations.

In terms of foreign trade, the balance through June 5th is negative US$258 million, with imports of US$2.8 billion and exports of US$2.5 billion. In exports, US$324 million in Advance on Exchange Contracts (ACC), US$ 657 million in Advance Payment (PA), and US$1.56 billion in other categories are included.
