Covid-19: Brazil Records 3.4 Million Cases, over 109,000 Deaths (August 18th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Ministry of Health’s daily update released yesterday, August 18th, reported 3,407,354 confirmed cases in Brazil since the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Between Monday, August 17th and yesterday, another 47,784 people were diagnosed with Covid-19, as reported by the state and municipal Health Secretariats.

The result marked a 1.4 percent increase over Monday, when the Ministry of Health’s panel reported 3,359,570 people infected since the start of the count.

The number of deaths totaled 109,888, according to the Ministry’s balance. In the past 24 hours, 1,352 deaths of Covid-19 have been added to the statistics. The sum represented an increase of 1.2 percent in relation to Monday, when the system recorded 108,536 deaths. There are a further 3,376 deaths under investigation.

Statistics are lower on Sundays and Mondays due to the challenge in feeding data by Health Secretariats on weekends. However, on Tuesdays there is a trend towards higher numbers due to the record backlog sent to the Ministry of Health’s system.

The Ministry of Health’s update also recorded 772,540 people in follow-up and another 2,554,179 who have already recovered from the disease.

The lethality rate (number of deaths divided by total cases) stood at 3.2 percent. The mortality rate (number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants) reached 52.3. The incidence of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants is 1621.4.

The states with the highest number of deaths are São Paulo (27,315), Rio de Janeiro (14,728), Ceará (8,196), Pernambuco (7,252), and Pará (5,975).

The states with the fewest deaths are Tocantins (531), Roraima (574), Acre (590), Amapá (619), and Mato Grosso do Sul (657).
