Church of England Confronts Crisis with Archbishop’s Resignation

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, resigned on November 12, 2024, amid a growing scandal concerning his failure to address serious allegations of sexual abuse within the Church of England.

His resignation followed the release of the Makin Report, which detailed extensive abuse by John Smyth, a former barrister and volunteer at Christian summer camps.

The Archbishop of Canterbury is the senior bishop and principal leader of the Church of England. He serves as the ceremonial head of the worldwide Anglican Communion and is responsible for overseeing the Diocese of Canterbury.

This position has a rich history, with its roots tracing back to Augustine of Canterbury, who arrived in England in 597 AD. Welby became the 105th archbishop when he was enthroned on March 21, 2013.

The Makin Report revealed that Smyth had abused approximately 130 boys and young men over several decades, both in the UK and in Africa. The abuse included severe physical punishment, with some victims reporting up to 800 cane strokes.

This misconduct occurred primarily during the 1970s and 1980s but continued until Smyth’s death in 2018. Welby faced mounting pressure to resign after the findings of the Makin Report were made public.

Church Accountability and Leadership Change

The report criticized him for not reporting Smyth’s actions to authorities when he first learned of them in 2013. It stated that church leaders had been aware of Smyth’s abusive behavior since at least 1982 but failed to take appropriate action.

This lack of accountability sparked outrage among victims and church members alike. In his resignation letter, Welby expressed deep regret for the Church‘s historical failures in safeguarding its members.

He acknowledged that he must take both personal and institutional responsibility for the prolonged inaction regarding the abuse allegations. He stated, “I believe that stepping aside is in the best interests of the Church of England.”

The backlash against Welby intensified as victims of Smyth’s abuse spoke out. Andrew Morse, a survivor who suffered under Smyth’s regime, described Welby’s resignation as an opportunity for accountability and healing within the Church.

He emphasized that this moment should serve as a turning point for how the Church addresses past abuses. The Makin Report highlighted a culture within the Church that prioritized protecting its reputation over supporting victims.

It noted that church officials participated in a cover-up to shield abusers from scrutiny. This environment allowed Smyth to continue his abusive practices unchecked for decades.

Welby’s resignation marks a significant moment for the Church of England as it confronts its past failures. The process for selecting a new Archbishop will involve nominations from church leaders and approval from the British Prime Minister.
