North American Churches Face Unprecedented Wave of Attacks

Churches across North America have experienced a surge in hostile acts in recent years. Both Canada and the United States have witnessed a significant increase in incidents ranging from vandalism to arson.

The wave began in Canada and later spread to the United States, each country facing its own unique challenges. Canada’s situation took a dramatic turn in May 2021.

The summer of 2021 saw a particularly intense period of attacks in Canada. Between June and July alone, 68 churches were burned or defaced. Investigators later confirmed that arsonists had deliberately set at least 24 of these fires since 2021.

Meanwhile, the United States experienced its own increase in church-related incidents. From May 2020 to September 2021, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops USCCB reported 95 attacks across 29 states.

The situation in the United States escalated dramatically by 2023. The Family Research Council documented 436 hostile acts against U.S. churches in that year alone. This marked a significant increase since they began tracking such incidents in 2018.

North American Churches Face Unprecedented Wave of Attacks

The nature of these attacks varied widely. They included vandalism, arson attempts, gun-related incidents, and bomb threats.

Over the past six years, from 2018 to 2023, the Family Research Council identified a total of 959 acts of hostility against churches in the United States. These incidents occurred in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Most of the incidents were acts of vandalism. From January 2018 to November 2023, there were at least 709 occurrences of vandalism. Additionally, 135 arson attacks or attempts, 22 gun-related incidents, and 32 bomb threats were recorded.

The frequency of these incidents has increased over time. In 2018, there were 50 reported incidents. This number rose to 83 in 2019, 55 in 2020, and 96 in 2021. The year 2022 saw a sharp increase to 195 incidents.

The year 2023 marked a significant escalation. In just 11 months, from January to November, 436 acts of hostility against churches were recorded. This was more than double the number of incidents in all 12 months of 2022.

States with higher populations tended to report a greater number of incidents. California had the most incidents, with 91. Texas had 62 incidents, New York had 58, and Florida had 47.

Law enforcement in both countries has made efforts to address these attacks. Some arrests have been made, but many cases remain unsolved. The ongoing nature of these incidents has raised serious concerns about religious freedom and community safety.

This recent series of attacks on churches signifies more than mere destruction of property. By targeting places of worship that have served generations as sacred havens, these acts also dishonor the memory of our ancestors.

The spiritual harm inflicted upon our society by such actions is immeasurable. As both countries grapple with these challenges, the search for understanding and reconciliation continues.
