China and Brazil Strengthen Ties Amid U.S. Trade Tariffs

China and Brazil are intensifying their partnership to tackle U.S. tariffs and secure critical metals, a move with major implications for global trade and resource control. The U.S. has slapped a 10% tariff on Chinese imports and a 25% duty on Brazilian steel and aluminum.

In response, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is weighing a World Trade Organization complaint or retaliatory tariffs, calling U.S. policies unfair. China, meanwhile, backs Brazil’s BRICS leadership and vows deeper cooperation.

At a press conference, Chinese spokesperson Guo Jiakun championed multilateralism and Global South interests, slamming protectionism as a lose-lose game. High-level talks at the Munich Security Conference between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Lula’s advisor Celso Amorim cemented plans for tighter BRICS and Latin American ties.

On the economic front, Chinese firms have invested $840 million (R$4.7 billion) in Brazil’s metal sector in under six months. In November, China Nonferrous Metal Mining bought Taboca, an Amazonas tin and niobium mine, for $340 million.

This week, MMG Singapore, linked to China Minmetals, acquired Anglo American’s Goiás nickel operations for up to $500 million, including two future projects in Mato Grosso and Pará.

These deals target metals vital for electric vehicles and energy transitions, where China leads demand. The U.S., under Donald Trump’s second term, counters with aggressive resource plays—new car tariffs start April 2, and Trump eyes Greenland’s minerals.

China, Brazil’s top iron ore buyer at 1.2 billion tons yearly, calls for dialogue over trade wars. Past moves, like CMOC’s $1.5 billion niobium buy in 2016 and BYD’s recent lithium grab, show China’s long game.

This alliance shapes more than trade—it’s a power shift in resource security, impacting investors and policymakers watching global markets. Brazil’s mines and China’s muscle could redefine who controls tomorrow’s economy.
