Brazilian Real Gains Momentum Against Dollar Amid Robust Exports and Technical Selling
On April 29, 2025, the US dollar traded at 5.655 to the Brazilian real, according to the latest market data. This level marks the real’s strongest position in nearly three weeks, as the currency continues to recover from its late-2024 lows.
The real’s recent strength has roots in both external and domestic factors, with the latest figures and trends confirming a shift in the market’s balance. The most recent session saw the dollar’s value against the real stabilize, following a week of steady declines.
Over the past seven trading days, the dollar lost more than 4% against the real. The current rate reflects a 10.5% depreciation of the real over the past year, but a clear reversal has taken hold since mid-April.
Commodity exports have played a decisive role. China’s drastic reduction in US crude imports redirected energy and agricultural shipments to Brazil, while iron ore prices climbed on revived Chinese demand.
These factors improved Brazil’s terms of trade, supporting the real and boosting confidence among exporters. The government’s renewed engagement with both Washington and Beijing, along with progress on the Mercosur-EU trade agreement, has further reassured business leaders.

Brazilian Real Gains Ground Amid Technical Momentum
The technical picture aligns with the fundamentals. The USDBRL hourly chart shows the pair trading below both the 50- and 200-period moving averages, with the price hugging the lower Bollinger Band.
This setup signals persistent selling pressure on the dollar, with the real benefiting from both momentum and supportive flows. Brazil’s current account deficit narrowed to $2.25 billion in March, the smallest gap since April 2024.
While still negative, this improvement came against a backdrop of higher imports and stable export volumes. Foreign direct investment reached $5.99 billion in March, down from February’s $9.3 billion but still above the long-term average.
These inflows, though volatile, continue to provide a buffer for the currency. Inflation pressures remain a concern. The latest Focus survey put 2025 inflation expectations at 5.68%, above the central bank’s target.
GDP growth is forecast to slow to 2% in 2025, following a strong 3.4% expansion last year. High interest rates and global trade uncertainties weigh on the outlook, with economists expecting growth to decelerate in the second half of the year.
Despite these headwinds, the real’s resilience stands out. Market participants cite robust commodity flows and cautious fiscal management as key supports.
The real’s recent gains may face tests from persistent inflation and slowing investment, but for now, Brazil’s currency shows strength rooted in trade and pragmatic policy.
