Brazilian comedians forced to flee the country due to political persecution denounce Moraes

By · December 28, 2022 · 2 min read

The comedians Paulo Victor Souza and Bismark Fugazza, from Canal Hipócritas, and the journalist Oswaldo Eustáquio denounced Minister Alexandre de Moraes, president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

They accuse the magistrate of violating “the rights of freedom of expression” in the country, with “several temporary arrests illegally decreed”.

In the suit, Souza, Fugazza, and Eustaquio also denounce the application of “disproportionate fines” to Brazilians without due process of law.

In a section of the document, the plaintiffs allege that Moraes acts to favor himself.

They claim that the magistrate’s wife is a partner of former congressman Gabriel Chalita, who would have close ties with President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

“The minister acts illegally, outside his powers and limits,” said Souza, Fugazza, and Eustaquio.

“He cannot persecute the common citizen for his opinion and has no legal competence. He doesn’t even have the competence as president of the TSE to order the arrest of an innocent citizen.”

The whistleblowers recall that Moraes requested Eustaquio’s arrest and ordered several restrictions on Fugazza’s and Souza’s social networks “without any offense committed by either of them.”

They reiterate, finally, that the minister violates due process of law and commits judicial abuses.
