Brazil Records $8.5 Billion Foreign Exchange Surplus Despite Financial Outflows in 2024
Brazil’s foreign exchange flow has shown a notable positive trend in 2024, reaching a total of $8.501 billion by November 29, according to preliminary data from the Central Bank.
This figure contrasts with the previous year’s net inflow of $11.491 billion, indicating a resilient economic environment despite fluctuations.
The financial channel, however, experienced a net outflow of $58.335 billion this year. This was driven by total inflows of $534.077 billion and outflows of $592.413 billion.
The financial channel encompasses various components such as foreign direct investments, portfolio investments, profit remittances, and interest payments.
On the trade front, Brazil‘s external balance remains robust, with a surplus of $66.836 billion for 2024. This is supported by total imports amounting to $210.458 billion and exports totaling $277.294 billion.
Notably, exports include significant figures: $31.107 billion from advance currency contracts, $68.878 billion from prepaid payments, and $177.309 billion from other sources.
Brazil’s Foreign Exchange and Trade Overview
In November alone, the foreign exchange flow turned negative, recording a deficit of $1.052 billion, following a positive flow of $2.790 billion in October.
The financial channel faced a net outflow of $2.127 billion, attributed to purchases totaling $48.686 billion against sales of $50.814 billion.
The external trade balance for November showed a modest surplus of $1.075 billion. Imports totaled $19.632 billion, while exports amounted to $20.708 billion.
The breakdown of exports reveals contributions from advance currency contracts ($2.159 billion), prepaid payments ($5.607 billion), and other entries ($12.941 billion). Weekly data from late November indicated a positive flow of $388 million.
This occurred despite a net outflow in the financial channel, which amounted to $2.594 billion during that period. The outflow was driven by purchases of $12.575 billion against sales of $15.169 billion.
Overall, Brazil’s economic landscape in 2024 reflects significant foreign exchange activity and trade performance. This highlights the importance of self-reliance and individual responsibility in navigating the complexities of international finance and trade dynamics.
