Peru: Non-traditional agricultural exports generate US$2 billion in the first quarter of 2022

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Peruvian non-traditional agro-exports reached a value of US$2.017 billion dollars in the first quarter of 2022, an increase of 17.1% compared to the same period in 2021 and 31.8% compared to the amount registered in the similar period of 2020, according to figures from the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat).

According to data from the entity and revealed by the Peruvian Foreign Trade Society (Comex Peru), the United States became the main destination for non-traditional shipments, with exports of US$702 million and year-on-year growth of 26 %. This figure represented 34.8% of total non-traditional Peruvian agricultural exports in the period under analysis.

Behind the North American nation were the Netherlands with purchases of US$303.9 million (a growth of 1.5%); Spain with US$108.8 million (-1.6%); China with US$95.2 million (104.8%) and Hong Kong with US$91.7 million (-2.4%).

In the first quarter of the year, fresh grapes were positioned as the main non-traditional agricultural product exported, with shipments worth US$616.7 million, which translated into an increase of 22.3% compared to the same period in 2021 (US$504.2 million).

The second most exported non-traditional Peruvian product between January and March was fresh mangoes, which reached a value of US$193.1 million. This meant a year-on-year fall of 9.7%.

For its part, fresh blueberries were placed in third position, with an export value of US$121.7 million, which represented a year-on-year growth of 119%.

Finally, fresh avocados ranked as the fourth largest exported product of the subsector in the first quarter, with a value of US$98.7 million, 20.3% less than in the same period of 2021.
