Last Decade: Bitcoin Was Best Investment; Brazilian Central Bank the Most Active

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Despite the ups and downs in recent years, the Bitcoin (BTC) will close this decade as the best investment possible, according to a report released by Bank of America Securities (BofA).

Those who invested US$1 in the world’s largest cryptocurrency in 2010 (bitcoin was officially launched in January 2009) today would have US$90,026, representing an appreciation of 9,002,500 percent.

Currently, Bitcoin is traded at US$7,000, a figure far from the historic high of US$20,000, reached in late 2017. Nevertheless, the digital currency was a great investment for those who bought it at its outset.

If on the one hand, the Bitcoin is the “currency” that has most appreciated, the Myanmar currency, the Kyat, recorded the world’s worst performance in the decade. Whoever bought US$1 in 2010, today has only US$0.004.

The BofA report further provides other curious facts about the markets around the world.

Brazil appears on the list, with the most active Central Bank of the decade: there were 24 interest rate hikes and 25 cuts, while Japan recorded only one cut in the decade.

Among other facts, in 2010 there was not a single dollar bond with a negative yield, while today there are approximately US$17 trillion in bonds with a negative yield.

In the sovereign bond market, 30-year US Treasury notes (marketable government debt securities) were the best investment in this category in the decade, according to the BofA.

Whoever placed US$1 in 2010 currently has US$2.08. On the other hand, the worst bond was Turkey’s, which today would be worth US$0.61 to those who invested US$1 ten years ago.

In the stock market, American stocks were the best investment, yielding 246 percent and reaching US$3.46 for those who invested US$1 in 2010.

Greece, on the other hand, performed the worst, with a decline of 93 percent, in which an investment of US$1 ten years ago is today worth only US$0.07.

Among commodities, gold was the best investment: Those who invested US$1 earned US$1.34, while oil was the worst, dropping from US$1 to US$0.74 in ten years.

Finally, among the features, the BofA also shows that the Indian population grew the most (149 million people), while Syria has lost 4 million people since 2010.
