RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – If the price of copper falls below US$4 a pound, the Peruvian economy could slip into a recession. Copper futures in New York fell to US$4.16 a pound on Tuesday, after hovering above US$4.50 for months.
The conditions established in China in the face of the outbreak of the pandemic have generated a drop in demand for the metal, which affects the Peruvian economy.

If copper prices drop below US$4 a pound and approach US$3.5 a pound, there could be a recession.
In addition, a scenario of lower copper prices is possible if the world economy slows down due to the cut in monetary stimuli and the rise in interest rates by the United States Federal Reserve (Fed).
