Peru: Machu Picchu South America’s top tourist attraction
Machu Picchu – Peru’s most popular tourist destination – has again received an international award, recognizing it as a major world attraction.
This time, the Inca citadel has been selected by the “World Travel Awards” as the leading tourist attraction of South America 2022.
The city founded by the Incas high in the Peruvian Andes above the valley of the Río Urubamba has received this important award for the fifth consecutive year, having already won this category in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.

The latest achievement was announced on Thursday, September 1, by the Peruvian Office of Export and Tourism Promotion (PromPeru), which highlighted the importance of this award, also known as the “Oscar of World Tourism”.
However, this was not the only recognition received by the neighboring country of Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile; it was also named the 2022 Leading Culinary Destination in South America and the 2022 Leading Cultural Destination in the region.
The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to recognize, reward, and celebrate excellence in all major travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors. Today, the World Travel Awards brand is recognized worldwide as the ultimate seal of approval for excellence in the industry.
