Peru wins three awards at the World Travel Awards

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Pride! Peru received the title of best culinary destination in the world in 2021 at the World Travel Awards (World Travel Awards in Spanish). The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) and the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (Promperu) also reported that Machu Picchu won the world’s leading tourist attraction and Peru’s best cultural destination.

Mincetur stressed how important it is to recognize and value these great triumphs in the tourism and gastronomy sectors, as they promote the culture and beauty of Peru’s destinations.

Amora Carbajal, executive president of Promperu, also stated and said she was proud of the outstanding awards that Peru is receiving. Thus, the country is positioned as one of the most crucial tourist destinations globally.

“We will continue working to ensure that Peru continues with a firm process of security and sustainability in each of the regions and tourist destinations that today welcome visitors from around the world, where gastronomy and cultural heritage are a source of joy and admiration,” said Carbajal.

The WTA awards distinguish and celebrate excellence in all global travel and tourism industry sectors.

MACHU PICHU AWARDED

Machu Picchu, Peru’s wonder of the world, also won a “Tourism Oscar”. Our tourism flagship won the distinction “Leading Tourist Attraction in the World” 2021 in the international edition of the World Travel Awards.

The Inca citadel, declared World Heritage by Unesco and one of the seven new wonders of the planet, shared the category with other essential attractions such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, and the IMG Worlds of Adventure (United Arab Emirates), the EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum (Ireland).

Also in the competition were the Great Wall (China), Ha Long Bay (Vietnam), Intramuros (Philippines), Las Vegas Strip and Grand Canyon National Park, Magic Kingdom Theme Park, Walt Disney World Resort Florida (United States), Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Niagara Falls (Canada), Table Mountain (South Africa), Taj Mahal (India), and the Acropolis of Athens (Greece).

AWARDS WON THIS YEAR IN TOURISM AND GASTRONOMY

On October 20, Peru took home four awards at the WTA South America edition.

Among the four categories that Peru won at the South American level, it maintained its victory in the Best Tourist Attraction and Best Tourist Office in South America categories. Thus, Machu Picchu was recognized by the voting public, but also PromPerú for its work as a promoter of Peruvian tourism.

Other important categories won by our country were: Best Culinary Destination and Best Cultural Destination.

This is the regional version of the World Travel Awards, “World Travel Awards Latam”, which precedes the global awards, where Peru was also nominated in categories such as leading tourist attraction in South America for Machu Picchu, Peru as a leading adventure tourism destination in South America and as a top culinary destination in South America, among others.

In addition, a few days ago Mincetur and Promperu announced that the World Cruise Awards 2021 recognized Peru as the best river cruise destination in the world and the best river cruise destination in Latin America.

Similarly, on November 23, Central restaurant, by chefs Virgilio Martínez and Pía León, was recognized for its gastronomic exploration of Peru’s biodiversity and took first place as The Greatest Restaurant in Latin America 2013-2021 (El mejor restaurante de América Latina 2013-2021, in Spanish).

Joining Central in the top 3 is another Peruvian restaurant, Maido. Peruvian restaurants and chefs took 16 outstanding places: Astrid y Gastón (4), La Mar (13), Osso (17), Rafael (20), Isolina (24), Fiesta (39), La Picantería (46), Kjolle (52), Mayta (56), Mil (61), Cosme (69), El Mercado (71), Mérito (78), Costanera 700 (96).
