The USD/COP exchange rate currently stands at 4,167.5, showing no change (0.0%) from the previous close. The Colombian peso has maintained its recent strengthening trend against the US dollar, continuing the momentum established over the past several trading sessions.

The USD/COP pair has decreased by 0.52% (-21.64 pesos) since yesterday, May 20, 2025, indicating that the US dollar has lost value compared to the Colombian peso.

This movement brought the pair close to the six-and-a-half-week low of 4,161.34 tested on Thursday, May 15.

Trading Activity

Trading volumes remained moderate throughout the day with balanced participation from both exporters and importers supporting the currency’s stability.

The Colombian peso has maintained the positive momentum established last week when it appreciated by approximately 1.52% over the seven-day period.

Looking at the broader trend, the peso has appreciated approximately 2.76% over the past month, reflecting a sustained recovery that began in early May.

Fundamental Drivers

The primary catalyst for the peso’s recent strength appears to be the downgrade of US sovereign debt by Moody’s.

Late last week, the rating agency reduced the United States’ credit rating from AAA to Aa1, which has weakened the dollar against several emerging market currencies, including the Colombian peso.

Additional factors supporting the peso include:

1. Latin American Capital Inflows: The region has seen positive equity fund inflows for three consecutive weeks, with the latest week recording the largest inflow since Q3 2023. Brazil Equity Funds specifically posted their biggest inflow in over 18 months, creating a positive regional trend that provides indirect support for the Colombian peso.

2. Improving Inflation Outlook: Colombia’s inflation has been on a downward trend, with the annual rate decreasing to 5.41% in October 2024, down from 10.48% the previous year. This decline suggests price stabilization, which has positively influenced currency sentiment.

3. Global Trade Dynamics: Recent adjustments in US trade policies, including tariff implementations, have impacted investor sentiment and trade flows, contributing to the exchange rate fluctuations.

Technical Analysis

The technical indicators for USD/COP show interesting patterns:

  • The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) reads 40.57, indicating moderate downside momentum without reaching oversold territory. The most recent reading of 39.66 further validates this downtrend momentum.
  • Bollinger Bands show decreasing volatility compared to the dramatic expansion seen during early April’s price spike to nearly 4,500. This band compression typically precedes a new directional move in the market.
  • The peso has found strong support at the 4,167 level, while immediate resistance sits at 4,220.
  • The 50-Day Simple Moving Average stands at 4,256.79, while the 200-Day SMA is at 4,271.59, both above the current price, suggesting a bearish trend.

Market Outlook

Analysts remain divided on the currency’s outlook. The current consensus forecast suggests the USD/COP pair could reach approximately 4,040.68 in the coming months, representing a potential decrease of around 3.35% from current levels.

However, Scotiabank Colpatria projects a different trajectory, with forecasts of 4,367 pesos for 2025 and 4,364 pesos for 2026.

Gov.Capital’s prediction system suggests the USD/COP could reach 4,419.82 (a 7.21% increase) after a year, indicating a potentially bullish outlook for the dollar against the peso in the longer term.

CoinCodex provides a more bearish short-term outlook, forecasting a decrease to 4,050.37, with sentiment described as “Bearish” and volatility at 0.93%.

As the Colombian central bank is projected to gradually reduce its policy interest rate to 7.75% by the end of 2025, this could potentially lead to some currency depreciation in the medium term, as lower interest rates may reduce foreign investment inflows seeking higher returns.

The market will be closely watching upcoming economic data releases and central bank communications for further directional cues in this dynamic currency pair.
