Death toll rises to 22 after shipwreck in Brazilian Amazon jungle

The death toll following the sinking of an illegally operating passenger ship in the northern Brazilian state of Para rose to 22 on Sunday after two bodies were found, according to regional authorities.

The boat sank Thursday in waters around Cotijuba Island in the regional capital of Belém.

According to the Secretariat of Public Security of Pará, rescue workers recovered two bodies of victims of the shipwreck on Sunday morning.

According to the state-run Agencia Brasil, 65 survivors of the accident were counted, all of whom were rescued in the first moments of the tragedy.

Authorities still do not know the exact number of passengers on the boat “Dona Lourdes II”, as it was used without the necessary permits to transport people between communities on the rivers of the Amazon.
