Brazil is world’s 2nd worst country (out of 25) for driving – Australian study

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The website ‘Compare the Market’ Australia has analyzed the best (and worst) countries to drive in.

The following aspects were observed in 25 countries worldwide: the quality of the roads, the level of congestion, the ratio of car expenses and disposable income, and traffic accidents.

WORST COUNTRIES

Russia came last in the ranking for having the worst road quality score of the countries examined, one of the worst congestion scores, and a high road fatality rate.

Brazil ranked second, with the highest road death rate among the three worst-performing nations (16.05 per 100,000 inhabitants). The country also has high car costs, poor levels of congestion, and poor quality roads.

BEST COUNTRIES:

Denmark is the best country for drivers. While it doesn’t necessarily have the best ratio of car expenses to disposable income, the country’s congestion and road quality are above average. Denmark also has one of the lowest road fatality rates, 3.70 per 100,000 people.

In second place is the United States, despite having one of the highest road fatality scores on the list, 12.67 per 100,000 people. Expenses are affordable for Americans, there are low levels of congestion, and good road quality contributed to the high ranking.

METHODOLOGY

The average annual operating cost figures were converted into USD on 18/05/21 and rounded down to the nearest dollar. An expenses-to-disposable-income ratio was calculated using the average annual disposable income from the OECD’s Better Life Index, in conjunction with the average annual operating cost figures.

Congestion level figures indicate the average increase in the time it would take to travel compared to non-congested conditions. These are based on an average figure calculated from the data listed in TomTom’s Traffic Index 2020 for available cities in all 25 countries.

Road quality is a score out of seven, with seven being the highest, based on a survey question from the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index.

The road mortality rate is a figure per 100,000 population. The annual operating costs and disposable income figures used to create the expenses-to-income ratio are listed in Motoring Expenses.
