RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Benefiting from trade and services, job creation with a signed worker’s registration book reached its seventh consecutive month of growth in October.
According to data released by the General Registry of Employees and Unemployed (CAGED), of the Secretariat of Labor of the Ministry of Economy, a net 70,852 formal jobs were created last month. The indicator measures the difference between hires and dismissals.
This was the best rate of job openings for October since 2016 when hires exceeded dismissals by 76,599. Job creation totaled 841,589 from January to October, 6.45 percent more than in the same period last year.
Job creation reached its highest level for the first ten months of the year since 2014, when 912,287 vacancies had been opened in the ten-month accumulated.
Sectors
In the breakdown by branch of activity, five of the eight sectors surveyed created formal jobs in October. The leader was commerce, with the opening of 43,972 jobs, followed by services, with 19,123 jobs. Industrial processing came in third place with the creation of 8,946 jobs.
The level of employment increased in construction with the opening of 7,294 jobs and in the mining industry, with 483 jobs. However, three sectors dismissed more than they hired: agriculture and ranching, with the closing of 7,819 positions; industrial public utility services , a category that includes energy and sanitation, 581 positions, and public administration, 427 positions.
Traditionally, job creation is lower in October. The month is usually marked by reinforcement in trade for end-of-year hiring. However, industry, which boosted production in August and September because of Christmas, is now slowing down. Agriculture and ranching also lay off employees due to the end of harvests of several products, such as sugarcane and coffee.
Highlights
In trade, job creation was driven by the retail segment, with the opening of 36,732 formal jobs. Wholesale trade generated the opening of 7,240 jobs. In services, the highlights were the sale and administration of real estate, with 14,040 positions; transportation and communications, 4,348 positions, and medical, dental and veterinary services, 3,953 positions.
In the processing industry, job creation was driven by the food and beverage industry, with 3,344 jobs; the footwear industry, with 1,890 jobs, and the timber and furniture industry, with 1,166 jobs.
Regions
All the Brazilian regions created jobs with a signed worker’s registration book in October. The South led the opening of vacancies, with 27,304 positions, followed by the Southeast with 21,776 positions and the Northeast with 15,980 positions. The North created 4,315 jobs and the Midwest opened 1,477 formal jobs last month.
In the breakdown by federative units, 23 out oif 26 states generated jobs last month.
The highest positive variations in the employment balance occurred in Minas Gerais with the opening of 12,282 positions; São Paulo, 11,727 positions; Santa Catarina, 11,579 positions, and Rio Grande do Sul, 8,319 positions.
The Federation’s units recording the closing of formal jobs were Rio de Janeiro, 9,942; the Federal District, 1,365; Bahia, 589, and Acre, 367.
