Bolivia to host the first Latin American forum on lithium
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Monday, Bolivia’s Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energy announced that the South American nation would host the first regional forum, Lithium Perspectives from Latin America, on April 13, 2022.
In this sense, the event seeks to generate a space for analysis and exchange of experiences and technological innovation of the Bolivian country with Argentina, Chile, and Mexico, which are the main accredited countries.
Likewise, the nations will address the challenges of developing the lithium industry in the region and the possibility of creating strategic alliances for bilateral and multilateral cooperation to optimize the use of lithium in the energy transition.

“This forum will allow the elaboration of a work agenda with Argentina, Chile, and Mexico to identify the potentialities we have among the four countries, through lithium resources, for the sustainable and inclusive development of Latin American countries, within the framework of the energy transition”, said the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy, Franklin Molina.
Latin America is the main target of large companies that invest in projects to industrialize the resources of the salt flats, especially lithium, since the region has 62% of the total world reserves of the evaporite.
According to the Bolivian Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energy, lithium resources from the salt flats of Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile account for nearly 90% of the world’s total.
The regional forum will be attended by the director of the Natural Resources Division of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Jeannette Sánchez Zurita; Chile’s Minister of Mining, Marcela Hernando; Argentina’s Secretary of Energy, Darío Martínez; and Mexico’s Secretary of Energy, Rocío Nahle García.
