Key Facts

  • Investment scale — BHP plans US$10.7bn to US$14.7bn in Chile, its largest cycle ever.
  • Main targets — Funds will go to Escondida, Spence, and Cerro Colorado operations.
  • Escondida focus — US$7.3bn to US$9.8bn earmarked, including a new concentrator.
  • First approval — Environmental permit secured for early works in July 2026.
  • Spence projects — Two growth projects sanctioned in June 2026.
  • Timeline — Spending spreads over a decade, with output stabilising through the 2030s.
  • Jobs impact — Cerro Colorado restart could bring up to 3,433 construction workers.

The mining giant is pouring up to US$14.7 billion into its Chilean copper operations. Here is what it means for global supply and your portfolio.

BHP Chile copper investment is the company’s biggest ever in the country, with US$10.7bn to US$14.7bn pledged over about ten years. The money goes to Escondida, Spence, and Cerro Colorado, tied to BHP’s July 2026 update on growth in Chile. For foreign investors, this signals that copper supply from Chile, the world’s top producer, will stay strong. But it also shows rising costs and technical challenges in a country that makes about a quarter of the world’s copper.

What BHP Is Actually Spending: BHP Chile copper investment

The numbers are huge, split across three operations. Escondida, the world’s largest copper mine, gets the biggest share: US$7.3bn to US$9.8bn from FY2028 onward.

That includes a new 125,000 tonnes-per-day concentrator costing US$4.4bn to US$5.9bn, plus US$2.0bn to US$2.6bn to upgrade the existing Laguna Seca concentrator.

Pampa Norte, which includes Spence and Cerro Colorado, receives US$2.8bn to US$3.9bn. The first approved stage at Escondida, for sulphide leaching and electricity infrastructure, is about US$1.3bn.

BHP got the initial environmental permit for that expansion on 7 July 2026.

The overall range of US$10.7bn to US$14.7bn reflects different scenarios for costs and project scope. This is the largest investment cycle BHP has ever undertaken in Chile.

Water scarcity and falling ore grades are key challenges that push costs higher. Yet BHP is committing this capital now, betting on strong long-term copper demand.

The company has already secured water rights and is investing in desalination to support future needs. This reduces one of the biggest risks in the desert region.

BHP expects these projects to create thousands of jobs during construction and operation. That is a boost for local communities and the national economy.

Why Chilean Copper Matters So Much

Chile is not just another producer. It holds the world’s largest copper reserves and makes about 25% of global mine output.

That makes its operations vital for everything from EV batteries to power grids.

For you as an investor, Chilean copper is a proxy for the energy transition. Demand is expected to rise sharply in the next decade, and supply is struggling to keep up.

BHP’s spending directly tackles that supply gap, but it also reveals the hurdles: falling ore grades and water scarcity push costs up.

The country’s regulatory environment adds another layer of complexity. Permits can take years, so early approvals are a positive sign but not a guarantee of smooth sailing.

Copper prices have shown resilience despite global economic uncertainty. This gives miners confidence to invest in long-term projects.

The Escondida Expansion Details

Escondida is the centrepiece of the plan. The new concentrator will add significant capacity, while the sulphide leaching project will pull more copper from existing material.

BHP says the programme aims to stabilise copper production through the 2030s.

The environmental approval in July 2026 was a key milestone. It covers early works only, but it shows progress in a country where permits often take years.

BHP has flagged that FY2027 output will dip slightly, but the growth pipeline should offset that from FY2028.

The new concentrator will have a capacity of 125,000 tonnes per day, making it one of the largest in the world. This is a massive engineering feat that will take years to complete.

Upgrading the Laguna Seca concentrator will improve recovery rates and reduce costs over the long run. The combination of new and upgraded facilities is designed to keep Escondida competitive for decades.

The sulphide leaching project will allow BHP to process lower-grade ore that was previously uneconomic. That extends the life of the mine and adds significant value.

Spence and Cerro Colorado: The Restart Play

Spence gets two new projects. The Concentrator Upgrade Recovery project will deliver first production in FY2028.

The Chalcopyrite Leaching project will follow with first cathode in CY2028. Both were sanctioned in June 2026.

Cerro Colorado is a restart story. BHP closed it in 2023 due to water issues, but now plans to bring it back.

The proposal could support a peak construction workforce of 3,433 and a maximum operational workforce of around 3,260. It is a smaller piece of the puzzle, but it adds jobs and output.

Water remains a critical concern for all operations in the arid Atacama region. BHP is investing in desalination and recycling to reduce reliance on fresh water.

The restart of Cerro Colorado will also need regulatory approval, which is not yet granted. This adds an element of uncertainty to the timeline.

BHP has signed agreements with indigenous communities to ensure water supply for the restart. These partnerships are essential for long-term sustainability.

What This Means for Investors

This investment cycle is a long-term bet on copper prices staying strong. BHP is committing capital now, expecting demand to outpace supply.

If you hold BHP shares or copper-linked funds, this is a signal of confidence.

But watch the execution risk. Mining megaprojects often run over budget and behind schedule.

The US$10.7bn to US$14.7bn range is wide, and the final figure could land at either end depending on costs and permitting.

For the broader market, this investment could help avoid a copper shortage in the 2030s. That would be positive for industries that rely on copper, but it may cap price gains.

Keep an eye on BHP’s quarterly updates to track how the projects are progressing. Any delays or cost overruns could affect sentiment.

Analysts see copper demand rising by up to 50% by 2040 due to electrification. This investment positions BHP to capture that growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the total value of BHP’s Chile copper investment?

BHP plans to invest between US$10.7 billion and US$14.7 billion over roughly a decade. The range reflects different scenarios for costs and project scope across Escondida, Spence, and Cerro Colorado.

When will the new copper production start?

The Spence Concentrator Upgrade Recovery project will produce first output in FY2028. The Spence Chalcopyrite Leaching project will deliver its first cathode in CY2028. Escondida’s new concentrator will follow in later years.

How many jobs will the investment create in Chile?

Cerro Colorado alone could support up to 3,433 construction workers at peak. BHP’s Chilean operations currently employ around 16,000 people, including 6,000 direct employees, with 42% being women.

Why is Escondida so important to global copper supply?

Escondida is the largest copper mine in the world. It produces roughly 1 million tonnes of copper per year, about 5% of global supply. Expanding it helps stabilise prices and meet growing demand.
