01 China: Trump Arrives in Beijing Watch

Trump landed in Beijing at 7:51 am ET Wednesday for a two-day summit with Xi Jinping. Greeted at the airport by Vice President Han Zheng, US Ambassador David Perdue, Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng, and Executive Vice Minister Ma Zhaoxu. Hotel arrival 8:35 pm local time. Corporate delegation: Musk (Tesla), Cook (Apple), Fink (BlackRock), Ortberg (Boeing), Huang (Nvidia). First China visit in over nine years; first post-COVID. House Oversight Chair James Comer warned of additional tariffs if no results.

02 Japan: Yen Holds ¥157.5 After ¥10trn Intervention Deteriorating

USD/JPY traded at ¥157.5 Wednesday from Tuesday’s ¥157.87 close. Japan deployed approximately ¥10 trillion ($67bn) across the Golden Week intervention episode per LiteFinance estimates — exceeding the ¥9.74 trillion deployed in 2024. Net short yen positions fell to a one-month low. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent scheduled to meet PM Sanae Takaichi, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, and BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda this week.

03 Japan: BOJ Signals June Hike Deteriorating

The BOJ April Summary of Opinions released May 12 indicated policymakers discussed additional rate hikes as soon as the next meeting. Japan’s 10-year benchmark hit 2.545% — highest since 1997. BOJ policy rate currently 0.75%. The OECD projected the BOJ rate could reach 2% by end-2027. Japanese government debt at 230% of GDP per October 2025 IMF projections.

04 South Korea: KOSPI Rallies on Chips Constructive

South Korea’s KOSPI rallied +1.75% Wednesday, reversing early losses on chip-strength leadership. The small-cap KOSDAQ slipped -0.46%. SK hynix continues HBM-order momentum from last week’s +11% single-day rally. Korean chip stocks track the SOX index closely. KOSPI has outperformed China’s CSI 300 by approximately 25 percentage points over the trailing twelve months.

05 India: Modi-To Lam Sign $25bn Trade Pact Constructive

India and Vietnam elevated their bilateral relationship to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership at Hyderabad House. The two countries signed 13 MoUs and set a $25bn annual trade target by 2030; current trade approximately $16bn. Agreements span critical minerals, rare earths, digital payments, pharmaceuticals, defence, semiconductors, AI and supply-chain resilience. To Lam’s state visit ran May 7-10.

06 China: Third Tanker Crosses Hormuz Watch

The Chinese supertanker Yuan Hua Hu, carrying two million barrels of Iraqi crude, crossed the Strait of Hormuz Wednesday as Trump arrived in Beijing — the third known passage by a Chinese oil tanker through the strait since the conflict began February 28 per Fox News framework citing MarineTraffic. Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to Beijing last week. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit Beijing within days of Trump’s departure.

07 Hong Kong: Hang Seng Closes 26,388 Watch

The Hang Seng Index closed Wednesday at 26,388.44, up +0.15% in choppy trade. Tuesday close was 26,347 (-0.2%). Tencent declined -0.4% Tuesday; SMIC fell -3.0%; Techtronic Industries -2.9%. AIA Group +1.2%, Pop Mart +2.0%. Mainland CSI 300 closed flat; Shanghai Composite +0.67% at 4,242.57; Shenzhen Composite +1.67% at 16,089.75.

08 Asia Regional: Mixed Pre-Summit Tape Holding

Nikkei 225 closed +0.66% at 63,101; Topix +1.36%. Australia’s ASX slipped -0.40%. India’s Nifty 50 traded flat at 23,400 after a five-session selloff. April US CPI printed at 3.8% YoY, highest since May 2023. WTI crude near $102; Brent at $107.05. Trump’s Monday rejection of Iran’s counterproposal kept the dollar strong on safe-haven demand.

09 Vietnam: Critical Minerals Pact Constructive

IREL (India) Limited signed an agreement with Vietnam’s Institute for Technology of Radioactive and Rare Elements per Organiser framework — joint exploration and processing of rare earths. The framework positions Hanoi as ASEAN gateway for the India-Vietnam Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Vietnam is India’s first comprehensive strategic partner in ASEAN. HCMC and Hanoi International Finance Centre frameworks launched late April.
