AquaRio Aquarium Opens “Brazilian Islands” Exhibition in Downtown Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – From this Friday, October 18th, South America’s largest aquarium in Rio de Janeiro, AquaRio, will host the exhibition “Ilhas Brasileiras” (“Brazilian Islands”). The show is an interactive journey through the main Brazilian islands and archipelagos.

During the tour, visitors are introduced to the ecosystems and the works developed in the coastal and oceanic regions of Brazil, such as Fernando de Noronha (Pernambuco), Atol das Rocas (Bahia), Trindade (Espírito Santo), Abrolhos (Bahia), and Cagarras (Rio de Janeiro).

In addition to photos with history and trivia, there will be a special program for children, with a game teaching about the diversity of animal and plant species, puppet theater and recreational activities, which will aim to engage children on the importance of preserving the biodiversity of Brazilian islands.

The exhibition will also feature the project “AquaEduca – Islands around the world”, in which AquaRio’s educators will tell how islands around the world have been formed, their different types and peculiarities.

“The aim of this exhibition is to show visitors the importance of these ecosystems. Brazil has islands and archipelagos that are incredible places and need to have their biodiversity conserved,” says Paulo Salomão, biologist and coordinator of AquaRio’s education sector.

In all, there are more than seven thousand kilometers of coastline and maritime and oceanic coastal islands that make the Brazilian coast one of the most beautiful in the world.

The exhibition “Brazilian Islands” ends on December 1st with the activity “Tomando Ciência” (“Taking Science”), in which scientific debates are allied to chat and a round of beer. The event – which will be attended by representatives of AquaRio, the Rio Islands Project, the Oceanic Islands Long-Term Ecological Research Program, and ICMBio – is free of charge and will take place in the lobby starting at 4 PM.

R$60 (US$15) – children from 3 to 11 years old (Brazilians and foreigners); youths from 12 to 21 years old (Brazilians); students (Brazilians); people over 60 years old (Brazilians), and people with disabilities (Brazilians and foreigners).

R$60 – residents and people born in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

R$100 – individual ticket for Brazilians and Mercosur tourists who do not fit in the above categories.

R$120 – individual entrance for foreigners who do not fit in the above categories.

Free – Children under 3 years old.
