Advisor to Ceará State Deputy Posts Video Shooting at Lula’s Photo

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Parliamentary advisor Alberto Vieira Júnior, who works in the office of state deputy André Fernandes (PSL, President Bolsonaro’s party), released on Sunday night, September 29th, a video on social media firing ten rounds with a pistol at a photo of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In the recording, Alberto Vieira addresses the former federal prosecutor general Rodrigo Janot. “Janot, this is how we do it, so as not to take anyone’s life. Take a picture and unload. All the anger is gone,” said the parliamentary advisor.

On Friday, September 27th, Janot had stated in an interview that on one occasion he went to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) with the intention of killing Justice Gilmar Mendes and then committing suicide.

In an interview with G1 news site, the State Prosecutor of Ceará (MPCE) Ricardo Rocha assesses that the video released by the advisor “may qualify as incitement to crime” due to its high visibility.

Criminal lawyer and professor at the University of Fortaleza Armando Costa Júnior says that the Criminal Code does not provide punishment for this case.

“I don’t think it’s an incitement to commit a crime. Unfortunately, the case will have to be settled in a field other than the criminal one. It’s very counterproductive for a person to publish this type of video,” Costa Júnior says.

“Although it’s not a crime, it’s shocking and irregular. The deputy to whom he is attached may take the appropriate steps and dismiss him.”

‘I don’t want Lula to die.’

To G1, Alberto Vieira said he doesn’t want “Lula to die,” he won’t “do anything to him,” and that the photo used as a target “could have been of anyone else.”

“It could be a dog [in the photo], it could be a horse, a donkey. It could be Che Guevara because I’m disgusted with him, it’s a photo,” said the parliamentary advisor. “I tell people that, when they are angry, they should shoot at a photo; if they have a gun, unload it, but don’t go out killing people, do not go out with a gun into the street saying that you will kill people.”

According to him, the video’s “purpose” was to show that it would be wrong to go armed into the Supreme Court and kill a Justice.

“It was the way I found to prevent other people from doing what Janot did, but I chose Lula. By my right, I don’t like Lula, but I don’t want Lula to die and I won’t do anything to him.”

Deputy André Fernandes, who liked the post with Alberto Vieira Júnior’s video, said to G1 that he would not express an opinion on the advisor’s action.

“In this case, I prefer not to give an opinion. Inspector Adalberto is a 58-year-old man, he is old enough to answer for his actions,” said the deputy.

“This does not seem serious to me, neither as a deputy nor as a person. The advisor himself is the one who has to worry about anything negative.”
