Medellín’s biggest event of the year returns from July 31 to August 9, and for the city’s large foreign community it is the fortnight to plan around. Here is what the 69th Feria de las Flores includes, when the marquee days fall, and how to navigate the crowds.

The dates and the finale

The fair opens on July 31 at the Obelisco and runs through August 9. Its signature event, the Desfile de Silleteros, falls on the closing Sunday, August 9, when some 530 silleteros carry towering flower arrangements down from the hills of Santa Elena.

That parade is the ticket most visitors build their trip around. Public viewing along the route is free, though grandstand seating is sold separately and tends to go early.

Five parades, not one

Beyond the silleteros, the programme runs five major parades. The Desfile de Chivas y Flores lands on August 2, and the Desfile de Autos Clásicos y Antiguos, a favourite for its vintage cars, on August 7.

A second edition of the Avenida Primavera parade and a Héroes de la Patria procession round out the marquee days, alongside the smaller Desfile de Silleteritos for children.

Flowers, orchids and music

The Jardín Botánico hosts Florecer, an exhibition featuring more than 500 native Colombian orchid species alongside flowers and crafts. It is the calmer, more contemplative side of a fair better known for its crowds.

Music is spread across the city: organisers plan 21 free stages, or tablados, distributed across the 16 comunas and five corregimientos, plus a headline concert at the Atanasio Girardot stadium and the National Festival of the Trova.

Where to base yourself

Most foreign visitors and residents stay in El Poblado or Laureles, both well served by the Metro and within reach of the main venues. Book accommodation well ahead: the fair is the year’s peak demand window, and prices rise accordingly.

On parade days, expect road closures and heavy foot traffic downtown and along the silleteros route. The Metro is the most reliable way across the city when streets are shut.

Practical notes for foreigners

The fair is billed as 100% public, with well over half of its events free, so a rewarding visit costs little beyond transport and food. Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes for long parade days.
