Over 9.1 million people were affected by poverty in Peru in 2022.
This represents 27.5% of the country’s total population and represents a percentage 1.5 points higher than in 2021 and 7.3 points higher than in 2019, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) announced Thursday (11).
According to the document “Peru: Evolución de la Pobreza Monetaria 2011-2022”, poor people in the Andean country increased by 628,000 last year alone.
Meanwhile, 5% of Peruvians live in extreme poverty, up 0.9% from 2021 and 2.5% from 2019.
By gender, the percentage of women in poverty is higher than that of men (27.8% versus 27.2%), and minors are the most affected population group (36.7% of the country’s population).
This is followed by 24.3% of those aged 18 to 59 and 21% of those aged 60 and over.
Regarding employment, 91.4% of the residents of poor households were engaged in informal jobs and 96.4% of the extremely poor households.
When broken down by geographic area, monetary poverty affected 41.1% of the population in rural areas and 24.1% in urban areas, an increase of 1.4 and 1.8 percentage points, respectively.
Comparing these results with 2019, poverty increased by 9.5 percentage points in urban areas and by 0.3 percentage points in rural areas.
