Uruguay to set up an innovation and trade office in Jerusalem, said President Lacalle Pou
Before 2025, the Uruguayan government will install an innovation and trade office in Jerusalem, said President Luis Lacalle Pou on Thursday during an event in which the Zionist Organization of Uruguay awarded him.
Lacalle Pou, in his speech, alluded to Israel’s potential as a forger of startups, as well as other government actors on various occasions, pointed out the desirability of targeting the Israeli entrepreneurial ecosystem to take it as a guide for the local technology industry.
Beyond the commercial aspects, the resolution has its political leg for installing an office in the city that the Israelis consider the capital of the State of Israel, but which in turn is a territory claimed by the Palestinians.

The Uruguayan president said Thursday that the installation of the office would be “before the end of the mandate”. Diplomatic sources consulted by Bloomberg Linea said the plan is still developing to advance in detail.
The definition Lacalle Pou committed this Thursday in public had been discussed since 2020 in reserved areas between the president, delegates of the Israeli government, and representatives of the Jewish community in Uruguay reported El Observador in March.
In June of this year, during an event organized by the Uruguay Israel Chamber of Commerce and the CPA Ferrere Consultancy, Industry Minister Omar Paganini pointed out that Uruguay should encourage the entrepreneurial profile and, in addition, aim to sell products that go beyond “pure software”.
“Israel can help us a lot, because in some ways it is much more advanced than us, but also because it is a small country looking at the world, with a robust entrepreneurial culture,” said Paganini.
