U.S. Warns Travelers of High Risks in Mexico: Cartel Wars, Crime, and Violence

The United States warned its citizens in August 2025 that traveling through much of Mexico has become dangerous.

The updated advisory uses a new word—“terrorism”—to describe cartel violence, making millions question their plans to visit, live, or do business in the country.

Washington’s travel map divides Mexico sharply. More than half of the states are marked red or orange, signaling Americans not to go or to reconsider travel, especially to places like Sinaloa, Michoacán, and Tamaulipas.

This isn’t just about vacationers. Companies and families want to know whether “terrorism” means ordinary criminals or something far worse. Official Mexican government figures show a complicated picture.

Nationwide murder rates dropped slightly by 2025, but cartel wars spiked in certain areas. In Sinaloa, homicides quadrupled after police arrested a major cartel boss, leading to over 570 deaths in just eight months.

Authorities also reported 29,000 arrests linked to cartels last year and seized more than 3.5 million illegal fentanyl pills. At least 1,500 people went missing recently, often victims of revenge attacks or cartel power struggles.

Researchers estimate violence-related costs reached $245 billion in 2024—nearly one-fifth of Mexico’s entire income. Despite these problems, tourism surged.

According to official data from Mexico’s statistics agency, more than 45 million international visitors arrived in 2024—a 7% increase over the previous year.

Tourism earned $33 billion and created nearly nine out of every hundred jobs. Beaches in Cancun and Los Cabos filled up, while cities like Mexico City stayed busy. Most tourists had uneventful trips, as fighting rarely happened around airports or resorts.

The US warning creates tension. Cartels fight each other and sometimes the government, but most visitors only see peaceful streets. The word “terrorism” grabs attention, but it mostly describes criminal violence, not attacks on tourists.

Mexico relies on tourism and business to keep its economy running. Any message that scares travelers affects livelihoods and investment. Today, Mexico faces two realities at once. Violence from cartels haunts particular regions, making some places simply unsafe.

At the same time, millions visit and do business without trouble. To stay safe, travelers and investors need accurate information—not just scary words or colorful maps.
