U.S.-China Pause Tariffs, Lowering Business Fears but Not Ending the Fight

The United States and China have agreed to hold off on new tariffs for another three months, following formal talks in Stockholm on July 27, 2025.

This move stops fresh taxes on hundreds of types of goods and gives global companies some relief from the threat of sudden cost jumps. The truce goes into effect immediately and will last until at least mid-October.

Both sides had already paused some tariffs since May, avoiding rate spikes that at times climbed as high as 145% for US tariffs and 125% for China’s.

The latest extension blocks new duties that could have hit computer parts, cars, phones, and medicines. The goal is to buy time, prevent new shocks, and give supply chains a chance to stay steady. Officials kept the talks focused on two main points.

First, they locked in the freeze on new tariffs, which was about to expire. Second, they addressed US tariffs tied to Chinese imports linked to illegal fentanyl—an area where Washington and Beijing remain deeply at odds.

The US imposed extra duties to pressure China to do more on illegal drug flows. China says this unfairly damages normal trade. Official data shows these tariffs hurt trade in both directions.

The US now imports less than 6% of its goods from China—down from 18% in 2018. Companies in both countries continue to search for new partners and suppliers.

Economists forecast the trade war will knock about 0.5% off total global economic growth and cut world trade by more than 3% this year.

This truce keeps markets calmer, at least for now, and gives businesses more time to adjust. But with the main disagreements unresolved, both governments say the fight could restart quickly if talks break down.

For consumers and investors, the pause means prices and supply chains should stay more stable through the next three months, but long-term uncertainty remains. The global tug-of-war over trade and economic power is far from over.
