Countries That Signed Agreements with Trump Before the August 1 Deadline

President Trump shook up global trade by demanding new deals with America’s major trading partners. He warned that countries would face steep tariffs if they did not settle by August 1.

This led some nations to strike new agreements, while others still face tough US barriers. By the deadline, the European Union, United Kingdom, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines reached deals with the White House.

Each had faced threats of much higher tariffs but bargained for lower rates and, in exchange, offered the US more access, investment, or market openings.

The EU accepted a 15% tariff, down from the initial 30% demand, and agreed to major investment in US energy and military imports. Britain secured a 10% tariff, with relief for its aerospace sector, and lowered tariffs for US companies.

Japan faced a 25% starting point but negotiated it to 15% by agreeing to boost US investment and open up to American goods. Indonesia and the Philippines both landed near 19% tariffs, paired with new purchases of US products and more open markets.

Vietnam accepted a 20% US tariff but dropped its own tariffs on American goods. Many other US trading partners struggled to reach any deal.

India, South Korea, Argentina, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Bangladesh were still trying to negotiate more favorable terms before the cutoff.

Shift in US Trade Strategy

They risked facing higher US tariffs that could hit their exports hard. Brazil did not close a deal in time and now faces the highest penalty: a 50% tariff on its exports to the US.

This approach marked a clear shift from older global trade deals, which were negotiated by big groups or organizations. Instead, Trump made each country negotiate separately, offering lower tariffs only if they accepted US conditions.

The US Department of Commerce recently reported a drop of more than 16% in imports in a single month under these policies, alongside a small increase in exports and a temporary cut in the trade deficit.

These policies mean some companies and workers may benefit if their country signed a deal, but those without an agreement face higher costs and less certainty.

As Trump’s actions ripple through supply chains and export markets, every country must now fight for its own deal to keep selling to American buyers. These changes bring opportunity but also new risks for global business, all set by the US, deal by deal.
