In a weekend broadside, U.S. President Donald Trump labeled Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, “an illegal drug leader,” threatened to cut assistance, and floated tariffs.

Bogotá fired back, calling the charge a grave affront to sovereignty and vowing to seek international recourse. Petro, a former senator and ex-mayor who campaigned on changing drug policy, said he is neither a businessman nor a trafficker.

The current strategy prioritizes rural development and crop substitution over aerial spraying, alongside operations against trafficking logistics and money laundering.

The story behind the story is a fight over what “success” looks like. Washington recently “decertified” Colombia’s drug-control performance for the first time in decades, but granted a waiver to avoid automatic aid cuts.
