India is thinking of changing big and may rename itself Bharat. The name comes from Sanskrit, an old language. It also refers to a legendary king.

India’s Constitution has two names for the country: India and Bharat. Hindi speakers use Bharat more. English speakers and foreigners use India more.

Who Wants the Change?

The ruling party, BJP, is pushing for the new name. Sources say lawmakers may approve it soon.

The move aims to counter a new opposition group called India. This group stands for the Inclusive National Development Alliance.

It’s led by the INC, the main rival party.

Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi’s leader, raised a question. He asked if BJP would still want the change if the rival group used Bharat.

Why Change?

People in favor say ‘India’ comes from British rule. They say it doesn’t show the real culture.

Bharat is more inclusive, they argue. It represents everyone in the country. The name would also boost national dignity.

President Droupadi Murmu hinted at the change. She called herself “President of Bharat” in invites to a big meeting.

Who Opposes?

Critics think the change is not needed. It would be costly and time-consuming. It would mean new documents and passports for all.

Some say BJP wants to force its views on others.
