Real decline. Argentina’s minimum wage purchasing power fell 39.7% between November 2023 and May 2026, per UBA’s IIEP institute.

Crisis comparison. Current purchasing power sits below levels recorded during the 2001 economic collapse.

Inflation driver. Nominal wage hikes reaching over ARS 340,000 (roughly USD 340 at parallel rates) have consistently lagged behind inflation exceeding 200% annually.

Long-term erosion. Compared to its September 2011 peak, the real minimum wage has dropped 66.5%.

Daily impact. A minimum-wage worker now needs nearly six hours of labour to buy one kilogramme of ground beef, up from two hours in 2016.

Argentina’s minimum wage has lost roughly 40% of its purchasing power since President Javier Milei took office, pushing real earnings below crisis-era levels and reshaping household budgets across the country.

The Numbers Behind the Argentina Minimum Wage Decline

Research from the Instituto Interdisciplinario de Economía Política (IIEP) at the University of Buenos Aires shows the real minimum wage contracted 39.7% between November 2023 and May 2026. Workers earning the legal floor can now buy only six out of every ten products their wage covered before Milei’s presidency began.

The Centro de Investigación y Formación de la República Argentina (CIFRA) corroborates the finding, estimating a loss exceeding 40% over the same period. Both institutes note that today’s purchasing power sits below the levels recorded just before the 2001 peso convertibility collapse.

Why Nominal Hikes Failed to Protect Workers

The government raised the nominal minimum wage from ARS 156,000 in January 2024 to over ARS 340,000 (roughly USD 340 at parallel market rates) through scheduled increases into 2026. These adjustments, however, consistently trailed inflation that exceeded 250% year-on-year in early 2024 and remained elevated through 2025.

The large December 2023 devaluation and subsequent price liberalisation created an immediate price shock that wage negotiations could not match. The Milei administration also showed reluctance to convene the Minimum Wage Council for aggressive catch-up increases during the first months of the adjustment programme.

What the Argentina Minimum Wage Buys Today

CIFRA’s purchasing-power illustrations paint a stark picture of daily life. One hour of minimum-wage work bought a kilogramme of bread in June 2016; today it requires two and a half hours.

For a kilogramme of ground beef, the time cost has jumped from two hours to nearly six hours of labour. The minimum wage now covers a significantly smaller portion of the basic food basket and total basic basket for a typical family of four.

The Investor and Expat Read-Through

For international investors, the wage compression signals a dramatic reduction in Argentina’s labour costs measured in hard currency. This has drawn interest from export-oriented sectors and service companies looking to hire talent at historically cheap peso rates.

Expats earning foreign income find their dollars or euros stretch considerably further in Argentina’s domestic economy. The flip side is a consumer base under severe strain, which limits the addressable market for businesses selling non-essential goods and services locally.

The Longer Arc of Wage Erosion

The current decline extends a much older trend. Compared with its peak in September 2011, the real minimum wage has fallen 66.5%, according to the IIEP data.

CIFRA calculates that today’s minimum wage carries roughly 60% less purchasing power than in 2015 and sits about 20% below 1990s levels. This multi-decade erosion means the Milei-era drop, while sharp, compounds pre-existing weaknesses in formal wage floors.

Policy Tensions and What to Watch Next

The government faces a persistent tension between its anti-inflation anchor and social pressure to restore purchasing power. Any acceleration of nominal wage hikes risks feeding back into price increases, undoing hard-won disinflation progress.

Markets will watch whether the Minimum Wage Council shifts toward more aggressive adjustments as the 2025 midterm elections approach. For now, the data confirms that Argentina’s wage floor has absorbed one of the heaviest blows of the stabilisation programme.

The 40% figure comes from CIFRA, a research center linked to the labor movement, so it is politically charged. The government counters that inflation has fallen sharply from its early-2024 peak, that real wages have been recovering from their low, and that poverty has declined, even as critics note the minimum wage still lags far behind.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much has Argentina’s minimum wage fallen in real terms under Milei?

University of Buenos Aires research shows a 39.7% decline in purchasing power between November 2023 and May 2026. Other institutes like CIFRA estimate the loss at more than 40%, with current levels below those seen during the 2001 crisis.

Why did nominal minimum wage increases fail to protect workers?

Inflation exceeded 250% annually in early 2024 and remained very high through 2025, consistently outpacing scheduled wage hikes. The government’s initial devaluation and price liberalisation created a price shock that wage adjustments could not match.

What does the minimum wage decline mean for expats and investors in Argentina?

Hard-currency earners see their purchasing power rise significantly in the local economy, while labour costs for export-oriented businesses fall to historically cheap levels. The trade-off is a severely constrained domestic consumer market.
