South Korea’s President Warns Peninsula Is One Misstep Away From War

North and South Korea are back in a danger zone where a single mistake could trigger a clash neither side planned.

That is the warning from South Korean president Lee Jae Myung, who says the peninsula is now in “a very dangerous situation” with almost no trust and almost no communication left.

Lee spoke to reporters aboard his plane after the G20 summit in South Africa, on his way to Turkey. He described a North Korea that has stopped answering calls, shut down formal channels, and is rebuilding layers of barbed-wire fences along the Military Demarcation Line, the thin strip that marks the old Korean War front line.

South Korean officials say they have not seen this level of physical fortification in decades. The military picture is getting tenser on the ground. Since the beginning of the year, North Korean soldiers have crossed the border more than ten times, often briefly and in small groups.

South Korean troops responded with loudspeakers and warning shots, sticking to strict rules meant to avoid direct fire. Seoul says some of these incidents are linked to poorly marked stretches of the frontier, which makes patrols more dangerous when political ties are already frozen.

In mid-November, South Korea proposed fresh military talks. The request was modest on paper: agree on a clearly visible line along the frontier to prevent accidental crossings. North Korea has not responded.

Balancing Deterrence and Dialogue on the Korean Peninsula

That silence plays out against the backdrop of one of the most militarised borders on earth, a 248-kilometre strip studded with landmines and guarded by large forces on both sides, plus about 28,500 U.S. troops and regular joint drills that Pyongyang brands as nuclear attack rehearsals.

Lee is trying to balance firmness and outreach. He insists South Korea must retain the strength to crush any provocation, yet also argues that even enemies should keep hotlines open.

In the longer term, he suggests that if a solid peace framework is ever built, it would be better to phase out joint drills rather than treat them as a permanent ritual.

Critics at home worry such talk could be read as weakness, while others see it as a pragmatic way to test whether Pyongyang wants more than barbed wire and silence.
