SOUTH AFRICA · TRAVEL GUIDE

Key Facts

  • Power South Africa has gone 525 days without load-shedding, counted to Friday, 23 October 2026.
  • School holidays Public schools close Wednesday, 9 December and reopen Wednesday, 13 January 2027.
  • Public holidays Election Day is Wednesday, 4 November; Reconciliation Wednesday, 16 December; Christmas Friday, 25 December.
  • Big events Cricket Tests, rugby sevens and a golf tournament run from Sunday, 15 November to Wednesday, 30 December.
  • US visitors Advisory Level 2; no visa for 90 days; Johannesburg is seven hours ahead of New York.

South Africa has had no scheduled power cuts for over a year. Summer brings school holidays and big sport.

In Plain English
  • Load-shedding: scheduled rotating power cuts that Eskom, the state electricity company, ran when it could not meet demand.
  • Load reduction: targeted cuts in a few areas with illegal connections, which Eskom treats separately from load-shedding.
  • Test: a cricket match played over up to five days, with two innings for each team.

South Africa has recorded 525 consecutive days without load-shedding, Eskom said on Friday, 23 October 2026, counting from 16 May 2025. Public schools close on Wednesday, 9 December, so the holiday crowds, flights and hotel prices of the southern summer follow.

This guide covers the power supply, the school-holiday weeks and the big events from Wednesday, 4 November to Wednesday, 30 December. It does not repeat the full list of December public holidays, which a separate guide covers.

Is Load-Shedding Over in South Africa?

Eskom’s statement of Friday, 23 October says the national grid has run without load-shedding for 525 days since 16 May 2025. The evening peak that day was forecast at 23,349 megawatts, against 26,900 megawatts of available capacity excluding gas.

Eskom puts its energy availability factor, the share of its fleet able to generate, at 68.1 percent for the year to date. Its diesel spending is down ZAR 4.81 billion (about US$289 million), or 79.2 percent, against the same period last year.

Targeted load reduction still affects 193,556 customers, down from about 1.69 million, in parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Gauteng is the province around Johannesburg and Pretoria, and KwaZulu-Natal is the province around Durban.

Eskom said on Friday, 2 October that it would announce its summer outlook in the coming weeks. The 23 October statement contains no such outlook, so a forecast for the December peak is still awaited.

Eskom also warns that illegal connections and meter tampering persist in some local areas and damage equipment. It says the power system remains stable and generation capacity exceeds demand.

What Visitors Should Do About Power

A year without scheduled cuts does not remove every outage, because faults and local repairs are separate from load-shedding. Ask your hotel or rental host whether the property has backup power, and charge phones and power banks each night.

If you stay in Gauteng or KwaZulu-Natal, ask your host about load reduction and outages before you book. Eskom’s statements give no street-level list, so the host is the best source.

School Holidays and the Busiest Weeks

The Government Gazette, the official government journal, ends the fourth term for learners on Wednesday, 9 December 2026. Teachers finish on Friday, 11 December, and the term began on Tuesday, 6 October.

Term 1 of 2027 starts on Wednesday, 13 January 2027, the government’s school calendar page says. That makes the public-school holiday about five weeks long, from Thursday, 10 December to Tuesday, 12 January 2027.

Families with school-age children can travel in this window, so expect coastal towns, game parks and flights to fill early. Book rooms, car hire and park entry well ahead, and check cancellation terms before you pay.

The gazetted calendar covers public schools only, so private and international schools may set other dates. Parents with children at those schools should ask the school directly.

Public Holidays That Change Your Plans

President Cyril Ramaphosa declared Wednesday, 4 November 2026 a public holiday for local elections, under section 2A of the Public Holidays Act. He urged employers to let staff vote, and voters can only vote in their own wards.

The Day of Reconciliation is Wednesday, 16 December, and Christmas Day is Friday, 25 December. The Day of Goodwill is Saturday, 26 December, with no substitute day listed, so Monday, 28 December is not a listed holiday.

Opening hours on these dates are set by each business, and the government’s list gives dates only. The separate guide to December holidays and closures lists the dates, so this guide does not repeat its detail.

Big Events From November to December

Ride Joburg, a 97-kilometre mass cycling race through Johannesburg, is on Sunday, 22 November, with a first start at 06:26 local time. That is 23:26 Eastern on Saturday, 21 November, and the finish is at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Midrand.

The organisers’ pages do not make clear whether entries are still open. Ask the race office before you plan a trip around the race.

South Africa host Bangladesh in two cricket Tests, the first from Sunday, 15 November at the Wanderers, a Johannesburg ground in Sandton. Play starts at 10:00 local, or 03:00 Eastern, and tickets start at ZAR 80 (about US$4.80).

Cricket South Africa, the national governing body, lists the second Test from Monday, 23 November at SuperSport Park in Centurion. Day-one tickets start at ZAR 50 (about US$3.00), with play again starting at 10:00 local.

The England and Wales Cricket Board, which runs England’s team, lists three Tests against South Africa this summer. The first is at the Wanderers from Thursday, 17 December, with day-one tickets from ZAR 150 (about US$9.00).

The Boxing Day Test runs from Saturday, 26 December to Wednesday, 30 December at SuperSport Park in Centurion. The third Test follows at Newlands in Cape Town from Sunday, 3 January 2027 to Thursday, 7 January 2027.

World Rugby, the sport’s governing body, lists the HSBC SVNS round at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, 5 and Sunday, 6 December. SVNS is the elite world rugby sevens series, and the schedule announcement gives no ticket prices.

The Nedbank Golf Challenge runs from Thursday, 3 to Sunday, 6 December at Sun City, a resort in North West province. The organiser lists six confirmed professionals, among them US stars Bryson DeChambeau and Wyndham Clark and England’s Justin Rose.

Spectator tickets cost ZAR 450 (about US$27) on Thursday and Friday and ZAR 500 (about US$30) on Saturday and Sunday. Up to two children under 18 enter free with each adult ticket.

Getting There From the United States

South Africa keeps UTC+2 all year, so it is six hours ahead of New York until Sunday, 1 November. It is seven hours ahead once US clocks go back that day, so a 10:00 Centurion start is 03:00 in New York.

The US State Department, Washington’s foreign ministry, says US citizens need no visa for stays of 90 days or less. It requires two consecutive completely blank visa pages in your passport and says you will be denied entry without them.

Yellow fever vaccination, at least 10 days before arrival, is needed only from countries the World Health Organization designates. Special rules apply to minors, so check with Home Affairs, South Africa’s immigration ministry.

Current nonstop flight schedules and fares from the United States for December are not confirmed. Check airline sites for routes to Johannesburg and Cape Town, and expect school-holiday demand to lift prices.

Safety and Costs for Visitors

The State Department’s 27 May 2025 advisory rates South Africa Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” for crime, terrorism, unrest and kidnapping. It says violent crime is common, kidnappers target foreign travellers, and strikes occur frequently.

Use licensed or app-based rides, avoid walking at night, and keep phones and bags out of sight in cars. These are common-sense precautions that follow the advisory’s crime warning, and they are not official guidance from South Africa.

South Africa uses the rand, which traded at about ZAR 16.63 per US$1 on Thursday, 29 October. At that rate the cheapest Test ticket listed costs about US$3.00 and a day-one England Test ticket starts at about US$9.00.

What It Means for You

If you plan a December trip, book flights, rooms and park entry early. Public schools are on holiday from Thursday, 10 December to Tuesday, 12 January 2027, and a base with backup power is wise.

If you follow the cricket from home, set an alarm for 03:00 Eastern on 15 and 23 November and 17 December. Both cricket boards publish the fixtures, and no US broadcaster is confirmed.

What Is Not Known

Eskom has not yet published its 2026 summer outlook, so the risk of load-shedding at the December demand peak is not forecast. Eskom’s statements give no street-level list of load-reduction areas.

Business opening hours on public holidays, private school dates and any extra public holiday in December are not confirmed. Ticket prices for the Cape Town sevens and US flight schedules are also not confirmed.

Whether Ride Joburg still accepts entries is not confirmed. The State Department page states no passport-validity rule, and no US broadcaster is confirmed for the Tests, the sevens or the golf.
