South Africa Holidays and Closures in December 2026

SOUTH AFRICA · PUBLIC HOLIDAYS
Key Facts
- —The country South Africa has 12 public holidays a year under the Public Holidays Act of 1994, and December is the start of its southern-hemisphere summer and school-holiday season.
- —Why it matters Three December dates can change travel plans, and the one that falls on a Saturday gets no day off in lieu, which keeps the Christmas break to three days.
- —Why now The first date is Wednesday 16 December, 54 days from today, and public schools close a week earlier on Wednesday 9 December.
- —What happened The Day of Reconciliation is on Wednesday 16 December, Christmas Day on Friday 25 December and the Day of Goodwill on Saturday 26 December 2026.
- —The numbers Schools reopen on Wednesday 13 January 2027, so the school-holiday season lasts about five weeks, and Johannesburg is seven hours ahead of New York in December.
- —What it means for you US citizens can visit for up to 90 days without a visa, so a December trip needs a passport valid for 30 days past departure and a plan for the three holiday dates.
- —Still open December opening hours for banks, shops, offices and public transport, Home Affairs hours and any extra holiday are not confirmed.
South Africa public holidays in December 2026 fall on Wednesday 16 December (Day of Reconciliation), Friday 25 December (Christmas Day) and Saturday 26 December (Day of Goodwill), the government’s holiday list shows. Because the law moves only Sunday holidays to a Monday, the Saturday holiday gives no day off in lieu, and the Christmas break is a three-day weekend from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 December.
For US readers, the dates matter for planning because public schools close on Wednesday 9 December and do not reopen until Wednesday 13 January 2027, a school-holiday season of about five weeks. South Africa is also seven hours ahead of New York in December, so an office that opens at 9 a.m. in Johannesburg opens at 2 a.m. Eastern time.
We checked the dates on the government’s public holidays page, the 2026 school calendar in the Government Gazette and two South African news outlets on 23 October 2026. Opening hours for individual businesses are not yet published, and we say so under what is not known.
South Africa Public Holidays in December 2026
The Day of Reconciliation falls on Wednesday 16 December 2026, one of 12 public holidays set by the Public Holidays Act of 1994. Under apartheid the date was the Day of the Vow, and the government says it kept the date after 1994 with the new purpose of fostering reconciliation and national unity.
Because it falls on a Wednesday, the holiday creates no long weekend by itself. Anyone who wants a longer break has to take leave on Tuesday 15 December or Thursday 17 December, which is a personal choice and not an official day off.
Christmas Day is Friday 25 December, and BusinessTech, a South African business news site, lists the weekend from that Friday as the three-day long weekend that closes the year. The Day of Goodwill is Saturday 26 December, the second of two 2026 holidays that fall on a Saturday, after Human Rights Day on Saturday 21 March.
The Act gives no day off in lieu when a holiday falls on a Saturday, so Monday 28 December is not an automatic holiday. BusinessTech counts only 10 weekday public holidays in 2026 for that reason, and The Citizen, a Johannesburg news site, lists the same three December dates in its school calendar report.
The President can proclaim an extra holiday under section 2A of the Act, as Cyril Ramaphosa did for the local elections on Wednesday 4 November 2026, the government news agency SAnews says. We found no proclamation of an extra day in December as of 23 October, so these three South Africa public holidays are the full list for now.
School Holidays and Peak Travel Weeks
Public schools close for the year on Wednesday 9 December 2026, and the Government Gazette calendar lists Friday 11 December as a final administration day for teachers. The fourth term began on Tuesday 6 October, The Citizen says, and it is the last term of the 2026 school year.
Term 1 of 2027 starts for learners on Wednesday 13 January, the government’s school calendar shows. Any trip that overlaps the weeks from 9 December to 13 January falls in the school-holiday season, so check prices and cancellation terms before you book.
December is summer in South Africa, and the government says the Western Cape gets most of its rain in winter while the rest of the country is mainly a summer-rainfall region. For a visitor that means Cape Town is usually drier in December than Johannesburg, which lies at 1,694 metres (about 5,558 feet) and keeps its average summer temperatures below 30°C.
Our guide to the best time to visit South Africa covers the regions in more detail. Our report on Kruger and Cape Point park fees covers the entry costs that change on 1 November 2026.
What Is Open and Closed on the Holidays
The government’s holiday list gives dates only and does not say which shops, banks, offices or attractions close, so opening hours are set by each business. We found no national notice of December trading hours for banks, retailers or public transport as of 23 October 2026.
Home Affairs, the department that issues South African passports and ID cards, extended its hours for passport and Smart ID applications last year. SAnews said offices equipped for those documents would close at 18:00 instead of 16:00 from 8 to 19 December 2025 and from 5 to 16 January 2026.
We found no 2026 notice of the same kind, so the December 2026 hours of Home Affairs offices are unconfirmed. Residents who need documents can book through the Branch Appointment Booking System on the Home Affairs website, and walk-ins were also accepted last year.
Our report on SASSA social grant payment dates for December 2026 lists when grants are paid. It is written for residents, but expats who employ domestic workers or drivers may find it useful.
Cricket and Concerts Around the Holidays
England’s men tour South Africa for three Tests that straddle the holidays, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board’s announcement of the dates set by Cricket South Africa. The first Test runs from Thursday 17 December to 21 December at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, the day after the Day of Reconciliation.
The second Test, the traditional Boxing Day match, runs from 26 to 30 December at SuperSport Park in Centurion, and the third runs from 3 to 7 January 2027 at Newlands in Cape Town. The announcement gives no ticket prices or start times, so we do not repeat any.
Our report on the Boxing Day Test at Centurion covers that match, and our report on Tamar Braxton in Pretoria on 16 December covers a concert on the holiday itself. Check each organiser’s own page for gate times and bag rules.
Time Difference and Entry Rules for US Visitors
South Africa uses UTC+2 all year with no daylight saving, according to the IANA time zone database, while US clocks go back on Sunday 1 November 2026, the National Institute of Standards and Technology says. From that date Johannesburg is seven hours ahead of New York and ten hours ahead of Los Angeles, so noon on Wednesday 16 December in Johannesburg is 5 a.m. Eastern and 2 a.m. Pacific.
The Department of Home Affairs lists the United States among its visa-exempt countries, with a stay of up to 90 days for US passport holders. The South African embassy in Washington says a passport must be valid for at least 30 days after your intended departure date.
Home Affairs also launched an Electronic Travel Authorisation on 12 August 2026, but the trade site Visas News said at launch that it covered citizens of China, India, Indonesia and Mexico and was not mandatory for US passport holders. Home Affairs said more countries would be added in the coming weeks, so confirm the rule on the Home Affairs website before you fly.
What It Means for You
For a US visitor planning around South Africa public holidays, the practical steps are to book flights and cars early if the trip overlaps 9 December to 13 January, to keep errands that need a bank or an office away from Wednesday 16 and Friday 25 December, and to confirm hours with each business. Monday 28 December is not an automatic holiday, because the Act gives no day off for a Saturday holiday.

What Is Not Known
No national notice of how South Africa public holidays change opening hours in December 2026 has been published for banks, retailers, the stock exchange, public transport or airports, so we cannot say which will close or run reduced hours. Home Affairs has not announced its 2026 festive-season hours, and no one has said whether the President will proclaim an extra holiday.
We also found no confirmed ticket prices or start times for the England Tests, and the ETA rules for US passport holders may change as Home Affairs adds more countries to the system. School dates are those of the public-school calendar, and we did not check private schools.
