São Paulo gets Latin America’s first fully automated metro line
German industry giant Siemens has equipped São Paulo’s Metro Line 4 with its radio-based train control system (Communications-Based Train Control, CBTC).
ViaQuatro has thus successfully launched the full operation of the entire line. Since the opening of the first section in 2010, it has become the first fully automated metro line in South America to operate with GoA 4, meaning the train is automatically controlled without any staff on board.
This is the highest level of automation that enables automatic control and operation of the trains. The digitized and optimized system enables more efficient, centralized control of operations and also provides greater safety, availability, and capacity throughout the network.

Line 4, also known as the “Yellow Line,” can carry up to one million passengers daily. The line starts at the main station, “Estação da Luz” and was recently extended to “Vila Sônia”. On a length of 15 km with eleven stations, 29 trains operate.
The line is operated by ViaQuatro, a company of CCR Mobilidade, the division responsible for all urban mobility projects of the CCR Group in Brazil.
GOA 4 – UNATTENDED
GOA4 automation implies starting and stopping; doors are fully automated without any on-train staff. It is recommended that stations have platform screen doors installed.
This system allows trains to operate automatically at all times, including door closing, obstacle detection, and emergency situations.
On-board staff may be provided for other purposes, e.g. customer service, but are not required for safe operation. Controls are often provided to drive the train manually in the event of a computer failure.
Examples include the Paris Metro Line 14, Barcelona Metro line 9, Sydney Metro, and Copenhagen Metro.
