Property Invasions and Extortion Attempts Unsettle São Paulo

Recently, the neighborhoods of Pacaembu and Perdizes in western São Paulo have faced numerous property invasions.

These incidents often lead to demands for large payments from property owners.

The targets are usually unoccupied homes, duplexes, and buildings, creating insecurity in these areas.

From January to April, the 23rd Police District in Perdizes recorded at least five cases of property boundary violations.

Intruders took over private properties partially or completely. Local police and the Public Security Secretariat are investigating to identify connections and assess this trend.

In some cases, property owners have been asked for up to $20,000 to recover their properties.

Those who refuse to pay must endure lengthy legal processes to reclaim their rights, often facing significant delays and costs.

One notable incident occurred on Apiacás Street, where an unfinished eight-story building was occupied.

The building, halted in mid-construction, was taken over by the Housing Struggle Front (FLM), a group advocating for housing rights.

This case was unique as it did not involve extortion. The occupiers, evicted from a northern São Paulo project since October 2022, sought shelter instead of financial gain.

Geni Monteiro, an FLM leader, declared their action was a response to the dire needs of about a hundred families. She emphasized the focus on single mothers who lacked homes.

The Apiacás building, seized last year, remains under bankrupt Atlântica Construction, highlighting São Paulo’s property and economic issues.

As invasions persist, residents have bolstered defenses and established networks for sharing crucial security details.

This joint action emphasizes the critical need to tackle housing and property rights challenges, revealing São Paulo’s urban complexities.
