Pope Francis Faces Long Recovery Battle as Hospital Stay Reaches Three Weeks

According to Vatican News and international media reports, Pope Francis has now spent three full weeks at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The 88-year-old pontiff battles bilateral pneumonia that severely tests his already fragile health amid continued medical concerns.

The Vatican describes his condition as “stable but complex” with his overall prognosis remaining “guarded.” Doctors continue high-flow oxygen treatments during daytime hours. They switch to non-invasive mechanical ventilation at night to support his breathing.

Pope Francis has experienced four episodes of respiratory insufficiency since February 22. His most recent crisis occurred March 3 when mucus accumulated in his lungs. Medical experts not involved in his care warn recovery could stretch into months.

The Holy Father broke his public silence Thursday night with a brief audio message. His voice sounded noticeably weak and breathless as he thanked the faithful for their prayers. He spoke in Spanish rather than his usual Italian for Vatican communications.

“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers,” Francis said with labored breathing. “I accompany you from here.” Vatican officials report the pope maintains some daily activities between treatments.

He receives the Eucharist, engages in prayer, conducts limited work, and even called a parish priest in Gaza this week. Physiotherapists work with him daily on respiratory and motor therapy.

The pontiff spends portions of each day in an armchair but may struggle with mobility. His extended hospitalization raises concerns about potential permanent lung damage. Francis had part of one lung removed in his youth following pleurisy.

Medical bulletins now arrive less frequently as his condition stabilizes. Doctors decided to skip Friday’s update and will release new information Saturday. This hospitalization represents his longest since becoming pope twelve years ago.

Professor Christoph Lange, an international respiratory disease expert, summed up the situation plainly: “Recovery remains possible, but the likelihood of adverse outcomes remains significant.”
