The Vatican announced on Monday that Pope Francis, 88, remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic as doctors address a “polymicrobial respiratory tract infection.”

This condition, involving multiple pathogens such as bacteria and viruses, has led to adjustments in his treatment plan. The pontiff’s hospitalization began on Friday after his bronchitis worsened, marking his longest hospital stay since a three-day admission for pneumonia in 2023.

Medical evaluations revealed a “complex clinical picture” requiring specialized care. Initial treatments, including corticosteroids, failed to yield the desired results, prompting a change in therapy.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed that while the pope is stable and in good spirits, his condition necessitates “absolute rest” and ongoing hospitalization. Specific details about the revised treatment or a discharge timeline remain undisclosed.

Pope Francis has battled significant health challenges throughout his life. As a young man, he underwent surgery to remove part of one lung following a severe pulmonary infection.
