Paraguay and Costa Rica lead the world in production of green energy
Paraguay and Costa Rica lead the world ranking of countries that generate electricity from renewable sources. This was announced by the Latin American Energy Organization (Olade) on Wednesday (20).
According to the report, both countries generate 100 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources. Iceland and Norway are in second place with 99 and 98 percent, respectively.
The list continues with Ecuador at 92 percent, Uruguay at 85 percent, El Salvador at 84 percent, Brazil at 77 percent, Denmark at 81 percent, and New Zealand at 80 percent.
These countries account for about two percent of the world’s population and about three percent of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
In landlocked Paraguay, three hydroelectric plants are in operation: two binational ones, Itaipu Binacional and Yacyretá, and one under the management of the state electricity distributor “ANDE”, Acaray.
The construction of a new dam on the Aña Cuá branch is currently underway and will increase energy production by ten percent.
As for the national electricity grid, “ANDE” is in the process of building and equipping the Yguazú substation, which will receive two 500 kVA lines from Itaipu and will allow the country to share with Brazil all the energy it is entitled to from the dam.
