Oil Prices Decline for Third Consecutive Session Amid Global Demand Concerns
Oil prices fell for the third session in a row, dropping nearly 2% today amid global demand worries. These concerns stem from economic recovery hurdles and a lack of new stimulus in China.
At the New York Mercantile Exchange CME, West Texas Intermediate oil for September delivery settled at $76.96 per barrel, showing a decline of 1.84% or $1.44.
Meanwhile, Brent crude for the same month closed at $82.40 per barrel on the Intercontinental Exchange, down 1.69% or $1.39.
A senior analyst, pointed out that upcoming economic updates from China, potential U.S. rate cuts, and Middle East negotiations will likely influence oil prices.
Recently, the Chinese economic outlook has weighed on the commodity, despite rate reductions by the People’s Bank of China.
President Joe Biden’s announcement of not seeking re-election did not affect the oil markets, noted Galimberti.
He added that the U.S. presidential campaign could sway oil prices due to the pivotal nature of energy policy discussions.
A Commerzbank report suggested that there isn’t a single cause for the current weakness in oil prices.
Analysts believe the downturn reflects a broader negative sentiment towards cyclical commodities, also seen in falling basic metal prices. Oil prices, initially resistant, started to decline last Friday.
Additionally, Russia has adjusted its oil output in July to align with OPEC+ targets. Although below the agreed production levels, Russia is making efforts to offset these shortfalls.
