Nigeria Boosts Oil Output to Lead Africa

In June, Nigeria increased its crude oil output to 1.27 million barrels per day. This enhancement of 1.57% from May’s figures positions it as Africa’s foremost oil producer.

It has overtaken Angola’s 906,000 daily barrels. The Congo followed with 259,000 barrels, securing third place.

These statistics stem from direct communications with Nigerian authorities, as per the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

OPEC’s report also highlighted a global context. While Nigeria saw growth, the collective OPEC-12 output dipped slightly by 80,000 barrels, totaling 26.57 million barrels daily.

In contrast, non-OPEC countries included in the Declaration of Cooperation noted a decrease of 45,000 barrels, leading to 14.24 million barrels daily.

Such fluctuations in oil production are significant. They influence global oil prices and economic stability, affecting everything from the cost of gasoline to the expenses of goods and travel.

Nigeria’s rise in production is particularly crucial. It showcases the country’s capability to influence global markets and bolster its economy amid fluctuating conditions.

On July 2, Mele Kyari, head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, declared an emergency in the nation’s oil sector.

He aimed to address persistent challenges that have throttled potential output.

Kyari asserted that without deploying new drilling technology, Nigeria could double its production to 2 million barrels daily.

This scenario not only highlights Nigeria‘s underutilized capacity but also underscores the broader challenges faced by oil-dependent economies.

These include the need for rapid adaptation and efficient management to harness potential fully and sustain economic growth in a volatile global landscape.
