A recent survey shows that 72% of French people see unregulated immigration as a security risk. Toluna, a French research firm, conducted the study.

It also found that 61% view immigration as a cultural threat. Additionally, 56% think it hurts social unity.

Only 14% support allowing immigrants in with no conditions. Meanwhile, 24% oppose accepting more immigrants altogether.

These views have been consistent for many years. A survey earlier this year revealed 64% oppose non-European arrivals.

Current trends may change these opinions over time, not because of a change in viewpoint but due to a decline in the native population.

Newer residents may push for easier immigration rules.

In 2021, 61% believe the local population is being replaced. This is a growing belief, not just in cities but also in the countryside.

It is spreading at a fast rate.

Context

France has a long history of immigration, dating back to the 19th century. After World War II, the country saw an influx from former colonies.

For years, France has been a top destination for migrants seeking a better life. Over the decades, immigration has shaped French society in many ways.

However, public sentiment toward immigration has had ups and downs. During economic booms, immigrants were often welcomed for labor.

In times of recession, however, tensions would flare. Terror attacks and crime have also fueled anti-immigrant sentiments.

Political parties have used the immigration topic to rally support. The right-wing movement, in particular, has gained traction by opposing open borders.

Recent laws have aimed to tighten immigration controls. However, the topic remains a divisive issue in French society today.
