Mexico’s President campaigns to dismantle the Statue of Liberty if Assange is convicted in the U.S.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) said on Monday (July 4) that if Australian journalist Julian Assange is convicted in the U.S. for the WikiLeaks case, a campaign should be launched to dismantle the Statue of Liberty in New York because that country would have lost its identity.

In a press conference from the National Palace, the federal president affirmed that a conviction against the journalist would mean a loss of the symbolism that the effigy represents and considered that the media should call a large concentration to demand the activist’s pardon.

“If they don’t do it, they will be tarnished, and we will have to start the campaign that if they take him to the U.S., and sentence him to the maximum sentence and die in prison, they will have to dismantle the Statue of Liberty that the French delivered, and that is in New York because it is no longer a symbol of freedom.”

López Obrador commented that he would ask his U.S. counterpart, Joe Biden, to review the case of Julian Assange, whom the U.S. authorities seek to prosecute for the severe revelations for his WikiLeaks website.

“I want to state that I am going to ask President Biden to address this matter, I am aware that it goes against the severe hardliners that exist in the United States as in all countries, but humanism must also prevail,” he said.

On other occasions, AMLO has indicated that he is willing to grant Assange Mexican nationality. However, he recalled that in the neighboring country, the presidents have the power that, through a decree, prisoners can be released or pardoned.
