Mexican Stocks Retreat 0.31% as Financial Sector Drags Market Lower

The S&P/BMV IPC index closed at 58,311.15 points on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, dropping 182.24 points or 0.31% from the previous session. This decline broke a recent upward momentum that had pushed the index near record highs.

Despite the pullback, Mexico’s benchmark index has gained an impressive 17.69% since the beginning of 2025, outperforming several regional peers.

Mining giant Industrias Penoles led gainers with a 3.14% rise to 410.99 MXN, continuing its strong performance that has yielded a 51.5% gain over the past year.

Food producer Gruma followed with a 1.77% increase to 369.78 MXN, while airline Controladora Vuela added 1.72% to reach 8.30 MXN.

Cemex rose 1.65% to 13.58 MXN, and Kimberly-Clark de Mexico rounded out the top five winners with a 1.14% gain to 35.34 MXN. The session’s worst performer was Grupo Bimbo, which tumbled 5.18% to 55.41 MXN.

Banco Del Bajio fell 3.35% to 50.51 MXN, while Grupo Financiero Inbursa dropped 2.73% to 50.57 MXN. Banking heavyweight Banorte declined 2.29% to 173.03 MXN despite showing a 3.32% gain over the past year.

Genomma Lab Internacional completed the top losers list with a 1.30% fall to 21.23 MXN. Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones by 138 to 95, with 16 issues remaining unchanged.

Mexico’s Equity Market Holds Uptrend

Trading volume was moderate, with particular weakness in industrials, consumer goods, and consumer staples sectors. The Mexican peso strengthened against the dollar, with USD/MXN closing at 19.27, representing a 0.26% gain for the peso.

Technical analysis of the S&P/BMV IPC reveals a strong uptrend since April, with the index maintaining position above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages.

The chart shows consolidation near the upper Bollinger Band, suggesting potential resistance around the 58,500 level. The 14-day RSI indicates the market is approaching overbought territory but has not yet reached extreme levels.

The MACD remains in positive territory, though momentum appears to be slowing. Volume patterns show distribution, with higher-than-average selling pressure during Tuesday’s session.

Key support levels exist at 57,500 (50-day moving average) and 55,000 (200-day moving average), while resistance sits at the recent high of 58,500. Mexico’s market currently trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 12.91, considered “fair” based on the five-year average range of 11.63 to 13.73.

This valuation compares favorably to global markets, with the All World index trading at a much higher P/E of 22.11. The market’s retreat occurred despite Banco de México’s recent 50 basis-point rate cut to 8.50% on May 15, which had previously supported equities.

Mexico’s economic resilience, evidenced by March’s $3.44 billion trade surplus, continues to attract investors seeking value in emerging markets amid global trade tensions and shifting monetary policy expectations.
